End-of-Semester Gathering

My dear TAs (from left to right in order) Yixin, Pinze, Alex, Yinlong, Eiko, Daniel, Kewei (and Abhishek, Michael, Coulson who couldn’t make it today to our end-of-semester coffee meeting due to their final exams), this semester wouldn’t be possible without you. You worked so hard and supported me so much that I cannot thank you enough for this. This semester has been crazy busy but we managed to finish it successfully with an incredible team work. I appreciate it. I am so thankful to you and feeling privileged to have gotten to work with such a team.

Most of you will leave soon, continue your careers in different universities as graduate students or start to work in the industry. I am very proud of your dedication to our field and how respectful you were to the job you have done. I wish you all the best in your future lives.

NEW CG APP

Computer Graphics (CG) is a sub-field of Computer Science which deals with generating images for use in any medium. CG delves deeply into advanced math and efficient algorithms in order to optimize the image creation processes. Its application areas include but not limited to movies, video games, commercials, scientific visualization and more. CG has close connections with Computational Geometry, Computer Vision and Image Processing like study fields. Among others, modeling, animation and rendering sub-fields of CG step forward and each of these three areas is actually another umbrella term for its own sub-fields.

At NYU, Computer Graphics has been taught in both undergraduate and graduate levels. Since it heavily relies on Math, CG course has been frequently considered as one of the difficult ones. We would like to work against this idea.  In this project, our aim is to teach the fundamentals of Computer Graphics to new beginners in undergraduate level by visualization of the concepts and gamification. Therefore, we gamified some of the starting level concepts in Unity. Results of this project will be analyzed in Summer 2024 and will be shared with public soon.

DURF-URC 2024

I am so proud of my students: Yinlong and Tim, who presented their impressive work at NYU URC Poster Session on May 3rd and both won the first places among their groups, and Daniel and Philipp who presented their amazing work in the panel session.

With my panel presenter advisees Daniel and Philipp, we are working on a sketch based model generation method which will be published soon.

Daniel, Philipp, Yinlong amd Tim: You will graduate soon and will study in some of the most prestigious universities as grad students. I am so happy and privileged to have been able to work with you guys. Thank you all.

DURF ANNOUNCEMENT

Three of my students have been named as a recipient of Dean’s Undergraduate Research Fund with our joint projects. Throughout next semester, they will be working hard on their projects. Congratulations to all 🎉 !!

Daniel Atlas: ML-Supported 3D Translation of Sketches with Constructive Solid Geometry in 3D Video Game Engines

Tim Chen: Cataract Surgery Simulator

Xi Liu: A molecular dynamics system to model biochemical interactions between self-propelled microbial agents and fluid molecules in aqueous environment
