December 10. 2015: Debate, “Can Neuroscience Help Us Understand Art?

Can understanding the brain reshape our conceptions of the arts?  Is there a viable field of neuroaesthetics?  Gabrielle Starr (author of Feeling Beauty: The Neuroscience of Aesthetic Experience) thinks so.  Alva Noë (author of Strange Tools: Art and Human Nature) thinks not.  They will debate this issue on Thursday December 10 from 6:30-8:30 pm at Casa Italiana (24 W 12th St).

Starr is Professor of English and Seryl Kushner Dean of the College of Arts and Science at NYU. Noë is Professor of Philosophy at UC Berkeley and a contributor to NPR’s 13.7: Cosmos and Culture blog and the New York Times’ Opinionator blog.
