From the Academic Computing Facility newsletter to a focus on research and technology at NYU
In 1981, the NYU Academic Computing Facility published the first issue of a print newsletter that provided information on computing resources available to the nearly 3,000 students who needed them at the time. As the University’s computing resources and the role of technology in academia evolved from a specialty discipline to an integrated part of everyday life, the newsletter evolved as well. In 1990, the NYU Academic Computing Facility Newsletter became a magazine, Academic Computing and Networking. In 1995, its name changed to Connect: Information Technology at NYU.
By 2010, computers had transcended the realm of computer science majors at NYU and Connect‘s content reflected that vast, rapid expansion. After more than two decades as a print publication, Connect transitioned into an exclusively online publication showcasing NYU’s IT landscape.
Refocused on Technology in Research, Art, and the Humanities
When it was launched, Connect focused on providing the NYU community with information about IT services available at the University, and celebrating some of the ways in which NYU employs technology. Since then, the NYU IT website, the NYU IT IT Security News and Alerts blog, and social media outlets, such as Twitter and Facebook, have greatly contributed to providing timely updates about IT services to the NYU community. With these venues in place to provide up-to-date IT news and services information, there is now an exciting opportunity to take Connect in a new direction.
In February 2018, NYU IT Communications launched a new version of Connect. This flagship publication continues to share stories of the many innovative applications of IT and computing resources at NYU, and will be further enhanced with more frequent updates on IT-related news, announcements, and accomplishments. The new format is organized into categories that align with the strategic priorities driving NYU IT (and IT in general). You can read more about each of Connect‘s new columns here.
Subscribe to Weekly Updates
This change also impacts NYU IT News, the monthly newsletter that NYU IT sends to the NYU community. NYU IT News’ content will now reside under the name Connect. Integrating the magazine and email newsletter into a single publication will better position NYU IT to deliver timely updates on an ongoing basis. News and announcements will be posted to a new section of Connect as they occur, and a monthly summary of highlights and features will be emailed to the NYU community. Additionally, readers who opt to subscribe to Connect will be alerted via a weekly digest of new posts.
Stay in Touch
Connect has always been a collaborative effort. We encourage you to reach out with any ideas you have for future topics, whether full articles or shorter news items. Connect is most exciting when we are able to tap into the rich reservoir of voices and experiences here at NYU. If you would like to become a Connect contributor, have an idea for a potential item, or would simply like more information, please contact us. We look forward to hearing your feedback on the redesign and your suggestions throughout the year.
