The Digital Studio shares the Research Commons with the Data Service Studio, the Libraries’ Coles Science Center, and reference and research services for business and government documents. Compared to the old location on the second floor of Bobst, this consolidated space has increased the Digital Studio’s visibility, provided a more open and flexible layout, and enabled us to offer a greater number of larger and more comfortable workstations. In addition, we now have the resources at our disposal to provide new and enhanced training sessions and events such as Techtonic (see sidebar).
Support for academic technology
The Digital Studio also provides support for a variety of new and enhanced NYU IT services. For in-person support or consultation on any of the services described below, please schedule an appointment with the Digital Studio staff.
Digital scholarship support
Aimed at assisting faculty with using technology in support of their research, the Digital Studio is available to offer advice for digital scholarship as it relates to project scoping, planning and management, copyright and fair use, digital publishing, and file management and storage.
Live audio/video room
Clients now have a dedicated space to the media arts; the Digital Studio offers a live audio and video room to assist clients with recording and capturing live media content. The AV room supports podcasts, web recordings, voiceovers, and video capture. It is also completely furnished with production equipment, including a DJ microphone, basic lighting, black screen background, interview chairs, and software editing applications. However, the Digital Studio does not lend clients technical hardware (e.g., cameras, additional microphones, external audio recording devices, or modified tripods). Please consult your school for obtaining these resources. The AV room can be reserved via the NYU Digital Studio Appointment Form.
Beginning spring 2013, the University’s primary learning management system, currently Blackboard, will be transitioning to NYU Classes. To learn more, please visit the NYU Classes project website (www.nyu.edu/nyuclasses-project) and register for a Getting to Know NYU Classes webinar via NYUiLearn. This session is ideal for any faculty member or support staff who is not already using NYU Classes and would like to get a sneak peak at a fully functional course site before the start of the Spring 2013 semester. Faculty and staff can register for a webinar by logging into NYUiLearn via the NYUHome Work tab, then selecting Course Catalog > Technology > NYU Classes. NYU Google Apps for Education

The Digital Studio is available to help you with any of the NYU Google Apps for Education, including NYU E-mail, NYU Docs/Drive, NYU Calendar, NYU Sites, and NYU Groups. NYU Groups service is a versatile alternative to NYU Lists that can be used as a group alias, a mailing list, a web forum, or a collaborative inbox to allow users to manage the workflow of topics and tag posts. For assistance setting up your own NYU Group and using these features, or for help with any of the NYU Google Apps for Education, sign up for a consultation at the Digital Studio.
NYU Stream (stream.nyu.edu), the University’s new streaming video service, launched this fall. Similar to a YouTube environment, this service allows you to upload, record via web-cam, manage, and share video clips. Online video tutorials can be found in the Support channel within NYU Stream and via the NYU Stream service website.
This past summer, NYU Wikis (wikis.nyu.edu) underwent an upgrade that offers a variety of enhancements, including a simplified rich text editor. In addition, the NYU community now has access to Atlassian University, a website that uses instructive videos and step-by-step, interactive tutorials to help you master all of the great features in NYU Wikis. It’s the fastest way to become a wiki aficionado. To get started, sign up with your NYU E-mail address at university.atlassian.com. The Digital Studio is open Monday through Friday, 10am to 6pm ET (and until 8pm on Wednesdays).
