THE SUBMISSION AND EDITORIAL PROCESS

Compass publishes a Fall and Spring journal every academic year. Compass is seeking interdisciplinary, unique academic research papers that have been developed in classes, independently, or from grant-funded research. While there is no page limit, we value concision.

Compass has taken several measures to assure that the best papers are picked. All papers are anonymized before reaching editors. At least three editors read each submission, to ensure that disciplinary and personal biases are reduced, and at least one editor will have a related academic background to the paper in question. Additionally, the editor-in-chief and executive editor read each paper closely. Papers are chosen democratically at the end of the reading period. Editors considering the following when reading their assigned papers:

  1. Writing Quality: We value papers that are well-developed research pieces with a clear writing style. We ask some of the following questions: Is this paper a well-developed research paper with thoughtful analysis and original ideas? Does the paper cite several articles and books? Is the writing clear and easy to understand, with a clear argument/thrust?
  2. Topic: We will consider the submission alongside other papers and choose papers that fit well with the other selected pieces and in Compass’s editorial style overall. We value original topics and ideas that make interesting connections or challenge familiar historical narratives.

We then will notify you of our decision, which could be one of the following:

  1. Acceptance: Your paper has been accepted, and an editor will work with you to make small edits, but no substantive changes.
  2. Acceptance with Revision: Your paper has been accepted, providing that you will be able to make some substantive changes in collaboration with a member of the editorial board. This would be a collaborative process with the editor, in which you communicate closely about making the paper as suited to Compass as possible.
  3. Rejection, but we encourage you to submit the next time around! Thank you for being part of the process with us and we look forward to reading your work!

CALL FOR PITCHES…

Summer Interactive Media / Digital Humanities Projects

Earlier submissions are accepted and appreciated. We want to sponsor your experiments in the humanities, and wherever that leads you. If it is “digital,” and “humanities,” and research focused, anything goes. The ideal candidate is interested in exploring over summer and sharing their project when they return in the Fall.  Examples of digital humanities/interactive media include:

  • Mapping using Storymaps and ArcGIS
  • Video, audio, and film
  • Data visualization
  • Visual narratives using Sutori, Pixton, Storify

HOW TO SUBMIT

Please send your submission in Word document format to compass.gallatin@gmail.com when the reading period is open. Format the subject of the email like this: First Name Last name Submission. Please note we only accept one submission per student. Anybody in the NYU community (including graduate students and alumni) can submit a paper so long as the paper is interdisciplinary.
