Welcome to the CoMM Lab at NYU!

We study how we use language in everyday life, especially how we adjust what we say depending on the situation. For example, we might say “the arch” to a NYU campus colleague, but we would likely say “The Washington Square Arch” to a visitor. But how does this ability to tailor our language – known as Audience Design – change when we’re talking to multiple conversational partners with differing amounts of shared knowledge? And how does it change for people with memory challenges, like those with dementia or memory impairment?
