Outside of the Collaborative Arts major, you have 32 credits to complete in the area of General Education (Gen Eds, for short).
The breakdown is as follows:
Expository Writing (8 Credits)
- There are two courses you will take in this area, both of which are required. They are:
- EXPOS-UA 5 Writing the Essay: Art & The World (Fall Semester)
- ASPP-UT 2 Writing the Essay: The World Through Art (Spring Semester)
- Note: The second course is offered through Tisch, not CAS, so make sure you are not registering for an EXPOS-UA course in the Spring.
Humanities (8 Credits)
- Many courses in CAS, Steinhardt, and Gallatin can count as Humanities courses.
- Popular CAS departments that usually count as Humanities:
- English, Art History, Dramatic Literature, Religious Studies, etc.
- NOTE: Creative Writing courses in CAS do NOT count as Humanities – only Open Electives.
- Cinema Studies courses in Tisch can usually count as Humanities courses.
- Foreign Languages in CAS can count as Humanities courses under the following policy:
- If you take the Elementary I level of a language and stop there, that course DOES NOT count as Humanities – only an Open Elective.
- As soon as you take the Elementary II level or higher, then BOTH courses together can count as Humanities (8 credits).
Social Science (8 Credits)
- Many courses in CAS, Silver School of Social Work, and Steinhardt can count as Science courses.
- Popular CAS departments that usually count as Social Sciences:
- Anthropology, Psychology, Sociology, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Studies, Biology, Chemistry, Math, Economics, Environmental Studies, etc.
- IMNY-UT 1 Code! and IMNY-UT 2 Code! 2 are Tisch courses offered through Interactive Media Arts that can count for Social Science credit.
- They are both 2 credit courses, offered online, asynchronously, for 7 weeks each.
Balance of Liberal Arts (8 Credits)
- This area just means you need an additional 8 credits in any combination of Humanities OR Social Science.
- Did you take Elementary Italian I and II and now want to take Intermediate Italian I and II? Great! The elementary credits will complete your 8 credits of Humanities and the intermediate credits will complete your 8 credits in this area. Done!
- Are you doing a minor in Economics and want to take 4 courses in that department? Great! 2 of those courses will count towards Social Science and the other 2 will count in this area. Done!
PLEASE NOTE: Tisch students are not permitted to take any courses in the School of Professional Studies (SPS). If the course code ends in -UC, then that is an SPS course and you will not receive any credit towards your degree.
