Double Majoring
- Due to the demands of the Tisch curriculum, double majoring for Tisch students is not always feasible. A double major typically requires 40-50 extra credits for you to graduate.
- If you are interested in pursuing a Double Major, your second major MUST be housed within the College of Arts and Science (CAS).
- Typically, you should avoid pursuing a Double Major if it is going to significantly add time to your degree (eg. an extra semester or two). Extra time also means extra money, which isn’t always a guarantee if you are on Financial Aid.
If you are interested in other areas of study, the more flexible option is to pursue a Minor instead!
Minors
- Minors are typically 16-18 credits (4-5 classes) and are much more possible for Tisch students.
- Unlike Double Major restrictions, you can pursue almost ANY Minor at NYU regardless of the host school. There are 230+ areas of study at NYU to choose from.
- For a full list on Minors at NYU, please see THIS LIST.
- Popular minors for Tisch students include:
- Business of Entertainment, Media, and Technology (BEMT) – Stern
- Child and Adolescent Mental Health Studies (CAMS) – CAS
- Languages (Italian, Spanish, French, etc.) – CAS
- If you pursue a minor in CAS – in Spanish, let’s say – you will earn Gen Ed credit for the courses you take AND be working towards a minor.
- Minors do NOT show up on your diploma. You should only pursue a minor if you’re actually interested in the subject, not because you think it will make you look better.
Policy for Double Counting Courses
- Some Tisch minors require Open Arts courses that also count towards Artistic Studies for CA students. Tisch policy states that you can only have ONE course count for both your major AND your minor – all other minor courses that you take must be allocated as Gen Eds or Open Electives.
