Advanced Standing Credits are any AP / IB / A-Level / College Level coursework that you want to add as credit(s) to your NYU Degree.
General Policies for Advanced Standing Credit
- You may transfer a maximum of 32 Advanced Standing Credits.
- Of these 32, only 8 credits MAX can be allocated towards Gen Eds – all others must be considered Open Elective credit.
- Advanced Standing Credits cannot be requested or added to your degree until you are at least a Sophomore.
- Applying Advanced Standing Credit almost always means that you will graduate earlier than your anticipated graduation date – so you should meet with Max to determine how that can affect your Financial Aid and/or Graduation Plan.
- You can transfer these credits at any point during your NYU career.
- Once Advanced Standing Credit is added to your NYU Degree, the credit can NOT be removed. This is why your decision must be fully thought through.

College Transfer Credit
- If you’ve taken college coursework while in high school, you may be eligible to earn NYU credit for it.
- You must earn a final grade of C or higher in courses you want to transfer.
- You must have an official transcript sent from the college to NYU Admissions (admissions@nyu.edu) before any credit can be assessed.
Permission to Register Off-Campus (PROC)
- NYU students have the opportunity to take up to 8 credits of coursework at another college during the Summer or J-Term (when they are not also taking NYU classes).
- PROC is something that must be requested and approved BEFORE you enroll in the classes, because Tisch Academic Services needs to verify:
- The courses are being taken at an accredited institution;
- The courses you are taking are not offered at NYU (if you’re taking a course that NYU offers, it will likely not be approved);
- How the courses would allocate to your NYU Degree (Gen Ed, Elective, etc.)
- Only AFTER you have received approval from Tisch Academic Services may you register for and complete classes at the other institution.
