Studying away is both possible and encouraged for Collaborative Arts students. As long as you have completed your entire CA Core curriculum, you have flexibility with when and where you choose to study away with only two exceptions:
- All students are required to be in New York in the Fall semester of Junior Year for the Body Library workshop requirement. You may study away Junior Spring.
- All students must spend their final semester of the program in New York to complete the Thesis course and presentation requirement for graduation.
There are two types of Study Away programs: Academic Semesters and Tisch Study Abroad.
Academic Semesters
- Academic Semesters are an opportunity for you to complete General Education requirements at another NYU Global Site.
- Example: You embark on a 16 credit semester at NYU Paris and complete all of your Humanities (8 credits) and Social Science (8 credits) requirements.
- You can pursue an academic semester at any of NYU’s 15 Global Sites.
- For questions about course offerings, application materials, housing abroad, and travel, contact the Office of Global Programs.
- For questions about visas, travel documents, and immigration paperwork, contact the Office of Global Services (which is different than Global Programs).
- Generally, the application deadlines are as follows:
- For Fall semester study away: February 15th
- For Spring semester study away: August 15th
Tisch Study Away
- Tisch Study Away is an opportunity to take complete, full semester programs through other Tisch departments while studying away.
- All Tisch Study Away programs are offered through the Tisch Office of Special Programs, NOT the Office of Global Programs. Contact Special Programs with any questions.
- These programs have a set curriculum, which means all of your classes are decided for you (or you get to select from specialized offerings) if you are accepted.
- PLEASE NOTE: If you want to take a Tisch course while studying away, you MUST apply to the entire study away program. You will NOT be able to take single Tisch courses abroad if you are doing a regular academic semester.
- Some Tisch Study Away programs have prerequisite courses that you must complete before starting the program. Be sure to read each program description carefully to make sure you are eligible.
- Generally, application deadlines are as follows:
- For Fall semester study away: February 15th (11:59pm EST)
- For Spring semester study away: August 15th (5pm EST)
General Study Away Questions
- Can I study away more than once?
- It’s possible, but usually students do 1 semester away due to the demand of our curriculum. You need to be on-campus in NYC for the entire core curriculum, Body Library, and Thesis.
- Can I study away during the Summer or January Term?
- Yes, but it is additional tuition like any other course would be. You should always consult with Max before choosing Summer or January Term courses in any location.
- Can I complete Collaborative Arts major requirements while studying away?
- If you are taking Tisch courses in an official Tisch Study Away program, you may be able to earn credits towards Artistic Practice or Artistic Studies. Talk with Max to see which courses might be eligible.
- I missed the deadline to apply. Can I still apply?
- Yes you can, but after the deadline admissions is rolling and based only on availability. Your placement will not be guaranteed.
