Art Studio Rules and Policies

The Art Studio can only be used by:

  • Current NYU Collaborative Arts faculty, staff and students
  • Current faculty and students from select Open Arts courses

GENERAL

  • No open food or drink is allowed in any of the studio areas.
  • No toxic chemicals, glues, spray paint or oil based paints of any kind are allowed in the art studio or woodshop.
  • Any work that requires eye protection must be done in the woodshop area only, behind a closed door.
  • Cutting with x-acto knives, box cutters or any blade must be done on a cutting mat.
  • All tools are for studio use only. They cannot be taken anywhere or checked out by anyone.
  • Return tools and unused materials to the place that you found them. Clean up after yourself.
  • No music playing in the studio.
  • There is a utility sink by the freight elevator for washing paint brushes. Please keep it clean, be mindful of what goes down the sink and that it doesn’t get clogged. If you are disposing of water that contains paint, plaster, sculptamold, please pour them in the disposal bin under the sink.
  • There are two first aid kits – one inside the Studio and one outside the Studio by the bathrooms.

 

WOODSHOP

  • All students must complete wood shop safety training to use the woodshop.
  • Wood shop equipment and laser cutters can only be used when Studio staff is on shift and present.
  • You must wear safety glasses when you use power tools. If the tool is loud, use hearing protection.
  • Never use a tool you haven’t been trained on, or which you are uncomfortable using. If you’re not confident how to use a tool, ask!
  • Never use a tool when fatigued or under the influence of any drugs or alcohol.
  • Never walk away from a tool that is in motion or in mid-cycle. The machine should be still and the switch should be in the OFF position before you walk away.
  • Adjusting guards or measuring material near a saw blade should only be done while the machine is off.
  • Never touch saw blades with your fingers. They can be sharp and/or hot.
  • Always wear proper clothing when using power tools (no open-toed shoes, no loose clothing to catch in moving parts).
  • Shoes are required in the woodshop. Bare feet, socks (only), flip-flops, open-toe sandals etc, are not permitted.
  • Do not wear gloves when operating spinning power tools.
  • Always tie long hair back when using power tools.
  • Never use a damaged tool. If a tool is damaged, report it immediately and have a staff member mark it as damaged. Don’t try to repair it yourself.
  • All hand power tools should be used inside the woodshop.
  • Always start saws or the belt/disc sander before they come in contact with wood.

STORAGE

  • Students cannot store their work in the art studio. The shelves outside the art studio are for short term storage only. Please remove projects as soon as they have been presented in class.
