A film screening in honor of NYU’s Institute of African American Affairs Director Manthia Diawara. An Opera of the World documents Wasis Diops Bintu Were’s, A Sahel Opera performed in Bamako, Mali in 2007. A pioneering work, it tells the story of migration from West Africa to Europe, combining traditional Malian music and Western opera. Diawara’s film serves as a mirror on the timeless drama of migration between North and South, and the ongoing refugee crises.
