I’m Don Welch, NYU’s new Global CIO. I am thrilled to be here at one of the world’s great universities in the greatest city in the world. As I’ve been learning about IT throughout NYU, I feel very fortunate to be working with you. You have accomplished so much as well as supporting NYU throughout the pandemic. You have already put in place many of the things that I was hoping to accomplish at Penn State and I’m grateful that we can leverage those to support NYU. The late Colin Powell used to say, “You’ll know you’re a leader when people will follow you if only out of curiosity.” I hope you are curious enough to join me on our journey to make NYU even greater.
NYU, like other major research universities, is a complex and diverse place. Information Technology is best run in a federated manner, but this means we must communicate, coordinate and collaborate to best serve NYU. These are areas we can always improve. I will strive to help us become better aligned to better support the teaching, research and service missions.
Many people search for purpose in their professional lives. Education is one of the most important things a free society does. We are fortunate in that we know that our talents are contributing to making the world a better place.
My goal is to send you a short message every other week. I will let you know more about me and what I hope to accomplish, IT successes across NYU, and other topics that will help us better collaborate.
