CIO Message to IT Leaders @ NYU

I am thrilled to be here at one of the world’s great universities in the greatest city in the world. The key to our success is our people. Great leadership brings out the best in people and we can all continuously improve our own leadership skills. You are receiving this email as you are a leader with management responsibility for IT staff.

One of the advantages of getting old is the accumulation of experiences. Over my career I’ve had the opportunity to make a lot of leadership mistakes and therefore learn a lot about leadership. Developing leaders is one of my passions. If we can all be just a little bit better leaders, our teams will deliver more to NYU. Over time we can make a big impact.

One of the ways I will contribute is by sending you a thought, tip, or lesson on leadership every other week. I will keep them short. My hope is that occasionally one will resonate with you and will help you in your leadership journey.

To start, I’ve attached a copy of my personal leadership philosophy. This is a tool that I have used to help speed up the process of my team understanding who I am as a leader. This helps to accelerate the trust-building that is the foundation of leadership. In future weeks, I’ll be discussing sections in more depth.
