NYU Counseling Psychology PhD Program Frequently Asked Questions
- Will you be accepting a new Counseling Psychology PhD student to begin in Fall 2025
Yes – I will be reviewing applications to accept a new doctoral student starting Fall 2025.
- Should I email you to introduce myself and express my interest in applying to your lab? Can I schedule a meeting to discuss my interests?
I appreciate receiving emails from prospective applicants, but I want to note that whether or not you choose to email me will not affect your chances of receiving an interview invitation or an offer of admission.
Due to the high volume of meeting requests I receive, I am unfortunately unable to accommodate individual meetings with every applicant outside of our program’s formal interview process.
- How do I know if I am a “good fit” for the Culture, Emotion, and Health Lab?
When reviewing applications and conducting interviews, I’m most interested in the fit between (1) their interests, experiences, and goals and (2) our lab’s mission, research focus, and my own capabilities as a mentor. These are often demonstrated by highlighting:
- Interest in our research goals and in-depth understanding of the current literature on topics studied in the lab.
- Mentored independent research experiences (e.g., honors thesis, leading an independent project, first-authored conference presentations).
- Interest in an academic research career focusing on the intersection of health/counseling/cultural psychology.
- Recently, we have begun a line of research on understanding factors associated with HPV vaccine intention and uptake among ethnic minority adolescents and young adults. Applicants with research interests in addressing cancer health disparities among ethnic minorities are especially encouraged to apply.
