My first Inspiration is Training Poses (Installation, 2019) by Sam Lavigne. The audience is invited to copy the poses being projected from the Microsoft COCO image dataset. I was very interested in how the installation looks deeper into how new technology views and interacts with the human body. In light of our class discussions on bias in machine learning databases, the fact that this installation lets people embody the dataset images sets the scene for a very important conversation.
The second inspiration for my final project, CVDazzle, is a project by Adam Harvey in which he experiments with design and computer vision algorithms in order to create a set of “looks” that can protect people from facial recognition systems. This project pushed me to think of the intricacies of our interactions with computers and how much they really see.
My third inspiration is my personal experience with back problems as well as it being a very common issue. During extended periods of working, sitting down, or using electronics, we tend to neglect proper posture and back health. During my personal research, I’ve come across a few stretches and collected theoretical knowledge that I will use in my final project.
