About Our Project

Why Prevent T2?

  • 48% of adults aged 65 and older have prediabetes
  • Just 14% are aware of their prediabetes
  • The DPP is most effective in adults over age 60

BRIDGE uses an evidence-based program: The Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP)

What is the DPP?

The Diabetes Prevention Program is a year-long program lead by certified lifestyle coach with 2 phases:

    • Core phase (months 1-6): 16 weekly sessions
    • Maintenance phase (months 6-12): minimum of 6 monthly sessions

The goals of the DPP focus on moderate changes in both diet and physical activity to achieve:

    • Weight loss
    • Increases in physical activity and improvement in diet quality
    • Reduction of HbA1c (a measure of blood sugar control over the prior 3 months)

What is BRIDGE?

We adapted the DPP specifically for older adults. Here are a few of the updates we made

  • Videos on behavior change tailored for older adults
  • Resources for accessing healthy foods and engaging in physical activity
  • PockeTalkers and closed captioning to support participants with hearing impairments

As part of the BRIDGE study, some participants are being offered the Diabetes Prevention Program online.

The BRIDGE study is funded by the National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases of the National Institutes of Health. You can learn more about the criteria for the study at Clinical Trials.gov by clicking here.
