Course Description
Our brain shapes who we are—our thoughts, actions, and experiences—making the study of neuroscience not just a journey into science, but an exploration of ourselves. By understanding how we think, feel, and function, we gain valuable insights into human potential and behavior.
This immersive educational program offers underserved middle and high school students a free opportunity to explore various academic pathways and ‘try on’ careers in science and medicine. Through hands-on activities, discussions, and demonstrations, participants will explore the connections between neuroscience, behavior, health, and technology. Students will dive into a range of scientific concepts, from the basics of biology and anatomy to the intricate complexities of the brain and its real-world applications.
Core Topics We’ll Explore
Our curriculum covers a broad spectrum of topics, including:
Biology and the Brain
- Building a strong foundation in biology to understand the body’s systems and how they connect to brain function.
Neuron Basics
- Understanding the building blocks of the nervous system.
Neuroanatomy
- Gaining in-depth knowledge of the structure and function of the brain.
Decoding Language
- Exploring animal vocalizations and the brain’s role in speech.
Behavior and Disease
- Investigating hormone regulation, neurological conditions, and their impact on behavior.
Sensory Processing
- Learning how our brain interprets sensory information and creates our perception of reality.
Future of Neuroscience
- From brain-computer interfaces and machine learning to optogenetics and neuroprosthetics, neuroscience is advancing rapidly toward new ways to decode, manipulate, and interact with the human brain.
Program Highlights
Science and Career Talks
- Connect with award-winning leaders in neuroscience and medicine, such as Dr. Michael A. Long, NYU’s Vice Chair of Research and Principal Investigator, and Dr. Dimitris G. Placantonakis, a renowned neurosurgeon and Principal Investigator. Gain exclusive insights into their groundbreaking work and diverse career paths.
Hands-On Activities
- From building model neurons to practicing suturing techniques, students gain hands-on experience to enhance their skills and deepen their understanding.
Sheep Brain Dissection
- A guided exploration of brain anatomy that offers students a first-hand look at neuroscience in action. In addition to sheep brains, we also conduct pig heart and cow eye dissections!!
Suturing Workshop
- Develop a valuable medical skill by learning basic suturing techniques in a controlled, educational environment.
Special Guests
- Enjoy mind-bending demonstrations by our guest, the internet-famous magician “Royal Pain” revealing the fascinating tricks our brain plays on us through illusions.
Course Objectives
- Cultivate curiosity and excitement about neuroscience, biology, and medicine.
- Introduce students to diverse career paths in medicine, neuroscience, and research.
- Provide a foundation for critical thinking, problem-solving, and practical skills in STEM fields.
- Foster a comprehensive understanding of neuroanatomy and basic human biology.
Learning Philosophy
We foster a learning environment that values respect, curiosity, and integrity. Students are encouraged to actively participate, ask questions, and explore different perspectives. We promote a collaborative approach to learning, built on honesty and shared discovery. Our program also emphasizes the importance of a growth mindset—believing that abilities and intelligence can be developed through dedication and hard work. We want our students to be open, willing to learn, and to understand that there is no limit to their potential.
