FAQ

Is the program running next summer?
Yes! We’re excited to announce our collaboration with the College and Career Lab in NYC, Johns Hopkins Internship for Brain Sciences in Baltimore, and Project RISE in Boston for next summer. These are all free outreach academic enrichment programs.

How can I express interest in the program?
Answer: First, visit our collaborators’ websites to learn more about their programs and determine your eligibility. If you are specifically interested in our Johns Hopkins program, please fill out this survey. If you do not qualify for any of the listed programs, you can complete our Interest Form, which allows us to keep you informed about future opportunities and helps us assess demand for the program.

Is the program free? Yes, all the programs are free.

Who is eligible to apply for the Brain and Spine Scholars program?
Answer: Eligibility depends on the specific program, but in general, middle and high school students are eligible to apply!

Is this program only available in NYC?
Answer: No. Our first program was held at NYU with students from across New York City. This summer, we are expanding to Boston and Baltimore, with plans to grow into other states and partner with additional organizations in the future.

How long does the program last, and what is the schedule like?
Answer: Program length and schedules vary by location. For exact dates, visit our collaborators’ websites or check the program tabs. Generally, sessions run Monday to Friday with a mix of interactive activities, presentations, and hands-on experiences. At NYU (College and Career Lab), sessions are from 8:00 AM to 2:30 PM, with 3 hours of science programming daily. Details for the Baltimore program can be found under the Johns Hopkins Internship in Brain Sciences tab.

How many students are accepted into the program each year?
Answer: The number of accepted students may vary each year based on capacity and resources. We aim to create an intimate and engaging learning environment to maximize the experience for each participant. In the summer of 2024, we had around 60 students.

When was the program established?
Answer: Founded in 2023 by Mac MacKay and Yllka Valdez, the program came to life in 2024 through a collaboration with College and Career Lab. Brain and Spine Scholars is entirely volunteer-run, driven by a team passionate about making science and medical education accessible to all.

Do I need to have a background in science to apply?
Answer: No prior background in science is required. The program is designed to introduce middle and high school students to various topics in science and medicine, regardless of their current knowledge level.

I cannot attend the program but still want to learn about neuroscience/science. Is there any way I can access study materials or videos?
Answer: Absolutely! We have listed some links below with videos and information for those who want to learn more or for parents who wish to introduce their child to new topics.

Is there a virtual component?
Answer: Currently, we do not offer a virtual program, but we are planning to introduce one in the future. If you’re interested, let us know! You can fill out the application form in the “Apply” tab or reach out via the “Contact Us” tab.

Is Brain and Spine Scholars an independent organization?
Answer: Yes, we are an independent organization, but we collaborate with other groups to expand opportunities for students. Our goal is to educate and inspire by exposing them to diverse fields in science and medicine.
