The FIFA European Cup is headed to Berlin this summer — and Berlin’s cultural institutions are making the most of it!

FUSSBALLKULTURSOMMER kicks off on Wednesday, June 12, and promises over 100 events, free of charge, and held at the Fanmeile near the Brandenburg Gate and interspersed throughout the city. And many of Berlin’s cultural institutions will “bring the spirit of the FUSSBALLKULTURSOMMER to venues all across the city, offering a diverse array of fan-culture and football-related events on all 31 days of the Euro 2024.”

The headliner for Berlin’s cultural scene in March is the MaerzMusik festival, held annually in the second half of the month. The festival is “rooted in the multimodality of listening, contemporary music, and sound, employing concerts, performances, installations, music theatre, film screenings, and discursive formats to open up a space where life, art, and theory can co-exist.” It features a variety of events across nearly every artistic genre imaginable, and is held at venues throughout all of Berlin. March also brings the Staatsoper Berlin’s annual Festtage. [Read more…] about Culture in the City – Spring 2024

Summer in Berlin: What to do, what to see

Are you in Berlin for the Summer? Did you know that one third of Berlin’s surface is green  (gardens, parks, woods) and water (lakes, rivers, canals)? Stroll around Tiergarten, the largest inner city park; take a boat from Wannsee and go all the way to Potsdam; go swimming in the open-air pool in Kreuzberg. Berlin’s tourism bureau visitBerlin has put together a great list of places to go and things to do: https://www.visitberlin.de/en/summer-berlin.

Pride Month in Berlin: An event calendar

The second “Pride Month Berlin” takes place from Wednesday June 2023 – the Stonewall Day – for four weeks, until Sunday, July 23.

Pride month is a time of celebration and recognition for the LGBTQ+ community. It is a time to honor the accomplishments of LGBTQ+ individuals, to reflect on the struggles and sacrifices made for equality, and to promote awareness and acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community.

The origins of Pride month can be traced back to the Stonewall riots in 1969, which were a series of violent protests by members of the LGBTQ+ community against police brutality and discrimination. These riots are considered a turning point in the LGBTQ+ rights movement and sparked the creation of many LGBTQ+ organizations and advocacy groups.

Exhibition: Love at First Fight – Queer Movements in Germany since Stonewall

At the Schwules Museum from March 01, 2023 until December 31, 2023

On the night of June 27th 1969, police stormed into New York’s Stonewall Inn once again. But on this occasion, it was one time too many: Stonewall’s queer patrons defended themselves against routine harassment. Decades of pent up anger then erupted in a days-long uprising on Christopher Street, setting the tone for queer emancipation in many parts of the world.

This day has often been narrated as a gay success story with a happy ending: civic recognition. But for many, the fight never stopped. “Love at First Fight” at the Schwules Museum opens up new paths and perspectives on (more than) 50 years of queer resistance in the Federal Republic of Germany, the German Democratic Republic, and finally in a reunited Germany.
