The Dremel is our back-up laser, and is only available when the Epilog is out of operation. Please visit the Epilog page for more information on laser cutting.
The Dremel Digilab is a desktop laser cutter/engraver. The laser is capable of cutting and etching acrylic, wood, paper, fabric, leather and other materials. Some wood and acrylic is available in the lab for student use, though students may need to buy their own materials — the lab will not special-order material for student use. Canal Plastics and T&T Plastic Land are good local sources for acrylic sheets.
Some materials are strictly prohibited. Vinyl cannot be cut or etched by the laser under any circumstances. The laser will not work on metal, and metal should not be put in the laser to avoid potential damage. More information on laser safe materials can be found HERE. Some materials are allowed in our Epilog laser, but we will not allow them in the Dremel. If you have questions about laser materials, email the lab tech, Monica, at monica.driscoll@nyu.edu.
