The MakerBot Replicator 5th Generation is a PLA filament FDM 3D printer. Prints from the Makerbot will have breakaway supports and a somewhat rougher surface than the other two printers, though prints can be sanded and treated with acetone for post-processing. Multiple colors of filament are available for prints (though each print is limited to one color).
The Makerbot is best option for large prints and prints with specialty or colored filaments. The Makerbot has the largest build volume and a wide variety of PLA filaments are available (i.e. glow in the dark, translucent, color-changing, metallic effect), both in the lab or for students to order on their own. The Makerbot also offers more options than the other two printers for controlling layer height, print density and other factors that affect print strength, quality and build time. Prints from the Makerbot generally have visible layer lines even with the smallest layer height, and supports often leave marks even after removal.
The Makerbot uses the online software MakerBot Cloud. Students can make their own accounts on the MakerBot website to prepare their print files ahead of their appointments.
