Hypersonmiac 2000
“A gate that track students’ specific hormone levels and respond to your desires with a choice of stimulants, no matter how tired are you we are here to help and provide what you need!”
The Performance
Reflection
What Worked Well
A strength of our group was our ability to understand and listen first to everybody’s idea. We also found it helpful to start our brainstorming with problems and how to create solution in the most interactive way we could deliver. This allowed us to finally have the idea of making the Hypersonmiac 2000 which turned out exactly like we expected.
Areas for Improvement
In the future, I would spend more time on the research of how the back system works in this machine, what data should we collect, and where to deliver the result of the data. More planning at the beginning around the data processing and how if there is error occur on the process of giving the stimulant may have helped as well.
Working on this project helped me to think critically and work with a whole new people that I have never know before. This is the way of making friends too, I really like it! I struggled at first with our time management because all of us are busy, but was able to make time and meet 4 times before the performance. We communicate our rough idea through google docs and communicate through wechat. This taught me the value of teamwork, respect others time, help with what you got, and give your best in the performance.
The most useful feedback we received was from Professor Eric, again, about the data processing. We kept presenting about how we want to use the data but we do not have enough research on how to save the user’s data and how we maintain the result. Taking the time to think about it more took our work to the next level. I’m glad that we also reminded how if our machine has an error in the process of scanning and giving the wrong stimulant. We do not have the answer for that yet, but soon will do if we do more research.
While imperfect, I’m proud of what our team accomplished. We were successfully deliver our performance in the creative and interactive way because I could hear the laugh and giggles from the audience. I feel happy when performing the hypersomniac 2000 and having amazing teammates. Thank you for the opportunity!
Our Journey to the Performance
We performed a storyline that showcase how our invention works, which show the interaction form of human and machine from the artifact Hypersomniac 2000.
To demonstrate this, we started with the brainstorm and state what problem to solve. Common problems that are close to us are college students tend to go to school with no sleep or low energy and how they we change that by walking through our gate, the hypersomniac 2000. The key parts of our performance were to clearly states how the machine works in an interactive way and how it is relatable, make sense, and solve problems. We felt this captured the essence of the interaction because the gate scan the blood pressure and can detect which stimulants work best for the student stepping in to the machine. There are options available for the students to stimulate their energy, such as coffee, shake, water spray, and blanket pillow.
One challenge we faced was how to collect the data and use it wisely. How we processing the data legally and how the data ended and safely keep for the user’s benefit. To overcome this, we have to work together with departments of health to better continue the data if any medical actions needed in the future. Looking back, I think we could have more research to better understand how the data is best use for.
Teamwork & Contribution
As part of the team, I feel I contributed to the overall success of the performance. I was responsible for building and painting the artifact and show how the machine works in the performance.
In terms of team dynamics, we work well together and we recognize our strength and take parts on what we good at. I found this positive because I had the rough and realistic idea, Simon provided detail example for the stimulants, Avril took a big part on building the machine, Dhruv made the script and the plot, and all of us working together to build and paint the artifact.
Overall, completing this project helped me learn to think critically how to translate idea into real performance that create real problem solution, I learn to know my strength and do teamwork.
Barbie AI
I saw the performance by the other group called Barbie AI. Their depiction of the performance was very clear by how they tell the story and how the tools they used helped the audience better understand the key takeaway.
Something they did really well was how they make their artifact so into the theme of Barbie and they create solution to save time when we choose and change outfit. However, I wondered if they could have more details or improvement because this idea is originally from the movie.
Our Script
Plot:
[narrator] Dhruv: Hi, my name is Dhruv Vaishnav and I am a Senior at NYU Shanghai studying IMB, Economics, and Mandarin. Now, like most of us, my freshman year was really rough. I “studied really hard” that most days, I would walk into the Academic Building with my eyes half closed while moving like a zombie.
Over the past week, my group and I have been determined in finding a solution to this very common problem and after different iterations and prototypes, we are excited to release the Hypersomniac 2000. The product is simple, the Hypersomniac 2000 is stationed at the entrance of the Academic Building and will track students’ specific hormone levels and respond to your desires with a choice of stimulants… legal stimulants, of course. All you have to do is walk into the machine, scan your body and fingerprints, and using the data from your body, the Hypersomniac 2000 will provide you with either coffee, a violent shake, or a spray of water.
*Hypersomniac 2000 enters the stage* (Audrey and Shuyu)
Introducing the first iteration of our product. Let us show you how it works:
Let’s say that you come to campus and you’re really tired. Unfortunately, because you are tired, you are unable to focus during class and might not be able to make it through your day . So, to give you a boost of energy, the Hypersomniac 2000 will dispense coffee. Take a look:
*Person 1 enters the machine*
Person 1: I am super tired, I really hope I can make it through the day.
*Hypersomniac dispenses coffee*
Now, I am not a coffee lover because it tends to increase my anxiety and the time I spend in the restroom. So, based on my cortisol levels, I will be violently woken up. This is another feature of our product.
*Person 2 enters the machine*
Person 2: I am so tired and anxious.
*Hypersomniac 2000 screams and wakes up Person 2(shake Person 2)*
I am sure they are awake now. but, maybe you have an exam and coffee or a violent shake will not do the job, we have our last feature which is to make sure you are awake for your 8AM class. I know this is what I needed for my Chinese class freshman year. This option works by spraying your face with ice water, giving you a refreshing new look for the day.
Person 3: *Yawns* I am so nervous for my EAP oral exam. i hope I stay awake.
*Hypesomniac 2000 sprays Person 3 with water*
Voila, this is the power of the Hypersomniac 2000. All these students are products of the Hypersomniac 2000. But, there is another mode called Insomniac that ensures that you get your rest. Take a look.
Person 4: My roommate played video games all night and now I am so sleepy.
*Hypersomniac dispenses a Pillow and a blanket*
This is an extremely common problem at NYU Shanghai and we plan on aiding students on their academic and personal journey. Whether you want to sleep or you want to wake up, the Hypersomniac is there to help. Thank you.
