Practical Information

Venue

NELS 56 will be held at New York University’s Manhattan campus on Washington Square.

Talks will be held at Hemmerdinger Hall and Jurow Lecture Hall, both at the Silver Center of Arts & Science (31 Washington Place, New York City, NY 10003) (Google Maps).

Some events will take place just across the street at the NYU Linguistics Department (10 Washington Pl, New York, NY 10003) (Google Maps).

Travel Information

Please see NYU’s Getting to New York page for comprehensive information on the airports, train stations, and bus stations that serve the area.

John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) is the most common airport that people fly into. Cab fare from JFK is a flat fare of $70 into Manhattan and metered to other boroughs. However, you should budget around $100 for a taxi or Uber ride in order to account for tolls, taxes, and a customary tip. For public transit options from JFK, take the AirTrain to Jamaica Station or Howard Beach, where you can change to a subway train or LIRR.

If you are flying into Newark International Airport (EWR), the best way to get into the city is to take the NJ Transit train to Penn Station; taking a taxi from EWR is not recommended.

LaGuardia Airport (LGA) is accessible by a combination of bus and subway. Cab fare is around $40–$70. Ride-share services like Uber and Lyft are available at all airports.

Closest subway stops to NYU:

  • 8th St-NYU: R/W trains (3 min walk)
  • Astor Place: 6 train (5 min walk)
  • West 4th St: A/C/E/B/D/F/M trains (10 min walk)
  • Broadway-Lafayette: B/D/F/M trains (10 min walk)
  • Union Square: 4/5/6, L, N/Q/R/W trains (15 min walk)
  • Christopher Street-Stonewall: 1/2 trains (15 min walk)

A local’s tip: please pay close attention to service changes, especially on weekends. Your subway line might skip stops, be rerouted, or not run at all. See mta.info, Citymapper, or Google Maps for up-to-date info.

Lodgings

Below is a list of recommendations for hotels in Manhattan and Downtown Brooklyn; here they are on a map.
