Course material

Books

  • Required. Cengage WebAssign subscription for Essential Calculus: Early Transcendentals, 2nd ed., by James Stewart. Access through the link on NYU classes. The subscription to WebAssign includes an electronic version of the book.
  • Optional. Essential Mathematics for Economic Analysis (4th or 5th ed.), Sydsaeter & al. Reference book only containing economics applications and linear algebra.

WebAssign

The class will use WebAssign for weekly assignments. WebAssign is an online platform that provides computational exercises, with an immediate feedback. It should be accessed via NYU Classes. WebAssign requires a subscription, which you can pay when you click the link on NYU classes, and that includes the e-book. You can also purchase an access code from the bookstore. By buying from the bookstore, you can bill to your student account and use financial aid. You will have a two-week grace period from the beginning of the term to purchase and activate a WebAssign license.

Campuswire

All communications will be handled through Campuswire. Announcements and course material will be posted there, so make sure to check it very regularly. You should also ask any question regarding the class there (this can be anonymous). Your instructor and TA will periodically offer some input, but it should first and foremost remain your own platform. For personal questions, send your TA or your instructor a DM there. Campuswire is accessible through NYU classes. You will first need the code available in the “Overview” page of NYU classes.

Gradescope

Written homework, quizzes, pre-class quizzes, and exams will all be administered through Gradescope. You will be able to see your graded assignments and comments from the grader there. Gradescope is available through NYU classes. You will receive a link to register at the beginning of the term.

Zoom

Live lectures and recitations will be delivered through Zoom. You should have the application installed on your computer or tablet before the start of the class.

Each session will be recorded, with recordings available through the Zoom tab of NYU classes. During the quizzes and exam, you will need to be connected on Zoom and have your camera on for the entire duration of the exam, showing your face and upper-body clearly.

Equipment

Considering that the class will be entirely online, you will need the following technology in order to follow the class.

  • A stable Internet connection.
  • A computer or a tablet to watch videos, follow live classes, and answer online tests.
  • A phone or tablet with a dedicated scanning app to take clean photos of your assignments, turn your assignment into a PDF, and upload them to Gradescope. A nice scanning app is Camscanner, but you can use any that you want.
  • A webcam to facilitate discussions and allow remote proctoring during tests.
