Class material

Books

  • Required. Essential Calculus: Early Transcendentals (2nd ed.) by James Stewart. An electronic version is included with WebAssign (see below), and you do not need to purchase a hard copy.
  • Optional. Essential Mathematics for Economic Analysis (4th or 5th ed.), Sydsaeter & al. It is particularly recommenced if you intend to follow up with MFE II.

WebAssign

The class will use WebAssign for weekly assignments. WebAssign is an online platform that provides computational exercises, with an immediate feedback. It can be accessed via NYU Classes. WebAssign requires a subscription, which you can pay when you click the link on NYU classes. Note that the subscription also includes the e-book. You can also purchase an access code from the bookstore. By buying from the bookstore, you can bill to your student account and use financial aid. You have three options: pay for one term, pay for multi-term (if you intend to take MFE II and / or III), or pay for Cengage Unlimited, which is unlimited access to all of Cengage’s texts. You will have a two-week grace period from the beginning of the term to purchase and activate a WebAssign license.

Campuswire

All communications will be handled through Campuswire. Announcements and assignments will be posted there, so make sure to check it very regularly. You should also ask any question regarding the class there (this can be anonymous). Your instructor and TA will periodically offer some input, but it should first and foremost remain your own platform. For personal questions, send your TA or your instructor a DM there. Canpuswire is accessible through NYU classes. You will first need the code available in the “Overview” page of NYU classes.

Gradescope

Written homework, quizzes, the midterm, and the final exam will all be administered through Gradescope. You will be able to see your graded assignments and comments from the grader there. Gradescope is available through NYU classes, and you should use your NYU email address to register.

Zoom

Live lectures and recitations will be delivered through Zoom. You should have the application installed on your computer or tablet before the start of the class, and you will need to log in with your NYU credentials. Each session will be accessible through the link on NYU classes, and will be recorded. During the midterm and final exam, you will need to be connected on Zoom with your camera on for the entire duration of the exam.

Equipment

Considering that the class will be entirely online, you will need the following technology in order to follow the class.

  • A stable Internet connection.
  • A computer or a tablet to watch videos, follow live classes, and answer online tests.
  • A phone or tablet with a dedicated scanning app to take clean photos of your assignments, turns your assignment into a PDF, and upload them to Gradescope.
  • A webcam to facilitate discussion and allow remote proctoring during tests.
