Parallel Sessions

Parallel Session I

Saturday, January 25th, 9 AM

Physics and Fashion: A good understanding of physics is essential for understanding draping and designing new clothes with new fabrics.  Daun Fallon, a Costume Shop Director at NYU Tisch School of the Arts, and Claire Swadling, an Harvard undergraduate with a background in fashion and technology, will discuss the intermingling of physics, geometry, and math with art, costume, history, and textiles.

What is high energy physics?:  What do physicists mean when they say “high energy physics”?  And what can we learn by studying it?  Join Dr. Qianshu Lu to explore this exciting research area.  Dr. Lu is a postdoctoral research fellow at the NYU Center for Cosmology and Particle Physics.

How to Give a Talk: Dr. Jasna Brujic will walk you through the steps to take and the notes to hit to give a great talk about your research.  Dr. Brujic is one of several core faculty members that compose NYU’s Center for Soft Matter Research.

LGBTQ+ Roundtable:  Join Ena Chia, Dr. Laura Kay, and Alex Wofford for a closed-door roundtable discussion for LGBTQ+ attendees.

Parallel Session II

Saturday, January 25th, 10 AM

The Physics of Cooking: Why does bread taste different after it’s toasted?  Why do some foods change color when cooked?  What do crystals and phase transitions have to do with chocolate?  Join Dr. Wenzer Qin, a postdoctoral research fellow at NYU, for an exploration of these questions and more.

Applying to Graduate School:  Dr. Emily Davis will discuss the do’s and don’ts of putting together a graduate school application.  Dr. Davis is an Assistant Professor of Physics at NYU’s Center for Quantum Phenomena.

Professional Skills 101: Join Kenya Farley from NYU’s Wasserman Center for Career Development for a discussion about the skills and tools you need to thrive in your career, wherever you go.

BIPOC Roundtable: Join Dr. Farah Dawood and Kiara Ruffin for a closed-door roundtable discussion for BIPOC attendees.

Parallel Session III

Saturday, January 25th, 11:30 AM

Everyone Wants to Hire a Physicist: Join Dr. Noel Goddard for a parallel session about industry careers.  Dr. Goddard is an Investor, entrepreneur, and interdisciplinary research scientist, and the CEO of Qunnect, Inc.

What is Soft Matter Physics? What can we learn from studying soft matter?  Dr. Alexandra Zidovska will introduce soft matter physics and discuss the applications of research in this field.  Dr. Zidovska is an experimental physicist studying physical phenomena in biological systems and materials.

Science Communication: Join experienced communicator Dr. Tina Brower-Thomas for a session where you will learn about communicating technical topics to broad audiences.  Dr. Brower-Thomas is a nanotechnology and quantum materials researcher at Howard University and a STEM education advocate.

First Generation/Low Income in Physics Roundtable: Join Ashley Argueta and Dr. Jesse Liu for a closed-door roundtable discussion for first generation and low income attendees.

Parallel Session IV

Sunday, January 26th, 10:30 AM

Physics and Climate Change: Join Dr. Laure Zanna for a talk and discussion about the physics involved in understanding and predicting climate change.  Dr. Zanna is a Professor in Mathematics & Atmosphere/Ocean Science at the Courant Institute at NYU.

Arts and Sciences: Physics intersects with art, music, film, and other creative disciplines.  Join artist Fiona Westphal and physicist Shahrzad Zare for a session about physics and sculpture.

Introduction to python/jupyter: Join Dr. Mike Blanton for a one-hour hands-on introduction to coding for physics.  Note: attendees should bring personal computers to this session.

International Students Roundtable: Join physicist Dr. Gaston Giribet and immigration lawyer Elisabeth Ames, Esq. for an information session for international attendees covering visa logistics and other immigration logistics.
