Take a glimpse of the history of the Arts Administration Programs at NYU Steinhardt from the words of the founding and former directors.

In 1971 NYU became the fourth university in the United States to establish an arts administration program. This was the beginning of a period of growing recognition that the arts were worthy of research into management to make them a more viable force in the welfare of the United States of America.

Many schools followed in the 1970s with their own programs. These programs were interdisciplinary and usually involved specialized courses and business skills courses for students to study in order to support the arts.

NYU’s Steinhardt School appointed Brann J. Wry the first director of its arts administration program, and what followed was the development of Performing Arts, Visual Arts, and Music Business M.A. Programs to serve the arts worldwide.

It has been a proud and happy history due to the faculties and alumni who have served the field for fifty years.

Karen Brooks Hopkins, President Emerita Brooklyn Academy of Music will give a keynote on the occasion of her forthcoming book “BAM – And then it Hit Me” to be published later this fall. She will also join the Performing Arts Administration and Visual Arts Administration alumni panelists in discussing the challenges and opportunities currently facing philanthropy and the arts.

Jack H. Knott – NYU Steinhardt

Jack H. Knott serves as the Dean of the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development at New York University and holds the Gale and Ira Drukier Dean’s Chair.

Before joining NYU, he served as the Dean of the Sol Price School of Public Policy at the University of Southern California, where he held the C. Erwin and Ione L. Piper Chair in Public Policy and Management. Prior to USC, Dean Knott served as Professor and Director of the Institute of Government and Public Affairs at the University of Illinois and of the Institute for Public Policy and Social Research at Michigan State University. He founded the MSU Survey Research Center and helped establish the Michigan Political Leadership Program. Dean Knott was also a visiting faculty member at Warrick University in the United Kingdom and a Fellow at the International Institute of Management in Berlin, Germany.

Dean Knott has published three books, numerous peer-reviewed, journal articles, and several policy reports. His areas of expertise include political institutions and public policy, political economy, and public management. He has served as the principal investigator on numerous research grants and has consulted with foundations and nonprofit organizations on program evaluation and public policy, including the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and the California Endowment. He currently serves on the editorial boards of two journals in comparative public management and policy.

Among his awards, he is an elected fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration and is a past President of the Network of Schools of Public Policy, Affairs, and Administration (NASPAA). In addition, he has served as a member of the Educational Advisory Panel, U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO), Washington D.C., a member of the Endowment Board of the American Society for Public Administration, and a member of the Board of Price Philanthropies foundation.

Dean Knott received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, his M.A. from the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies at The Johns Hopkins University, and his undergraduate degree from Calvin University.

Francine Sheffield-Wasson – Sheffield Global Arts Management – PAA ’12

For six years, Francine Sheffield traveled and performed around the world as a company member of Urban Bush Women. After earning her MA in Performing Arts Administration, Francine worked as an Artist Representative for Pentacle, where she booked engagements for emerging dance companies. In 2014, Francine founded Sheffield Global Arts Management where she offers exceptional artist representation and consulting services to a select group of established and emerging dance companies, with a focus on women and people of color. The company is now in partnership with Rhizome Arts Consulting. Francine serves on the board of the Association for Performing Arts Professionals (APAP), and is Co-Chair of the Agent, Managers, Producers and Promoters Council (AMPP) for Dance/USA. She has also served on Professional Development committees and Planning committees for the Western Arts Alliance (WAA), Arts Midwest (AMW) and APAP conferences.

Christine Yoon – Wallace Foundation – PAA ’08

Christine Yoon joined the Wallace Foundation in November 2013 as a program officer in arts, and was named senior program officer in November 2017. She brings to the role experience in philanthropy, nonprofit arts administration and for-profit business development. Yoon served for six years as manager of philanthropy at American Express, where she focused on two funding priorities: developing emerging nonprofit leaders and preserving historic places.

She was also the assistant to the chief financial and administrative officer at the New York Philharmonic, and served in a variety of strategic marketing and business development roles on the business side of American Express.

Yoon holds a B.S. in economics from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and an M.A. in performing arts administration from the Steinhardt School at New York University. She is an alumna of Coro’s Leadership New York program.​ Yoon volunteers as co-chair of New York Grantmakers in the Arts, co-chair of the New York chapter of Asian Americans Pacific Islanders in Philanthropy and locally in her community.

Session Description – Arts Administration in a Global Context – Leadership, Diplomacy and Equity

We will explore how cultural diplomats, cultural policy experts, and international arts administrators are responding to 1) the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, and 2) society’s mandate to develop more inclusive cultural programs and practices.

Hyo Han – Korean Cultural Center New York – PAA ’09

Hyo Han is the Director of Performing Arts at the Korean Cultural Center New York (KCCNY), a branch of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of the Republic of Korea, operating in New York at the Consulate General of Korea with a mission to bring the cultural contents of Korea in all of its diversities to New York and to stimulate cultural exchange between the US and Korea.
Hyo’s main work centers on bringing Korean performing arts works to New York not only by producing annual programming at the Cultural Center, but also by collaborating with arts and cultural institutions such as Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, BAM, 92Y, and many more. Over the past 9 years, Hyo has brought a wide array of performing arts genres to the stage including music, dance, theater, and Korean traditional performing arts to small clubs and large-scale venues alike, attracting hundreds of thousands of audience members to experience Korean culture firsthand. She has also founded KCCNY’s signature performing arts program, OPEN STAGE, which features an annual program of emerging and early-career Korean and Korean-American performing artists based in the US alongside living legends from Korea.

Kris Lewis – Fowler Museum at UCLA – VAA ’07

Since 2017, Kris has been the Director of Development at the Fowler Museum at UCLA in Los Angeles, where she implements all strategic fundraising efforts. She was previously the Director of Government and Foundation Relations at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), and prior to that, Associate Director of Development at the Museum of Contemporary Art, LA (MOCA). She also held fundraising positions at Otis College of Art and Design, LA and The Whitney Museum of American Art, NY. Kris has been a fundraising and arts business consultant for 14 years, most notably, launching the Martha Alf Foundation (2020); implementing a fundraising department at the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek Museum, Copenhagen, Denmark (2015); and co-producing an award-winning, large-scale public art project with renowned artists Cindy Sherman, Jenny Holzer, Barbara Kruger, and Louise Lawler (2008). Since 2015, Kris has been an annual visiting speaker at New York University for the Master’s Visual Arts Administration program.
