Each student will conduct independent research, create relevant recipes, perform experiments with ingredients, substances, materials, and production methods. They will then create an illustrated, simple-to-follow step-by-step tutorial like a cooking recipe or a laboratory experiment for each project. Students will propose a possible application of this material using the knowledge acquired throughout the semester, the findings of their research, and either manual (project 1) or digital fabrication (project 2) techniques. In these projects, students are encouraged to speculate for critical and provocative purposes, as well as explore the potential of the medium to deliver highly sensory experiences.

Artist research PRESENTATIONS 5%

Choose your topic in this document: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/12-gsUMQPaP0SQkee6Uez6QRsVxaD-T8NV6Vj2CvCuVk/edit?usp=sharing

Every student will present an artist presentation during class. Artists/Themes are given out on the first day of class. For your artist presentation you will have 7 minutes to present, 3 minutes response. The presentation has to be submitted as PDF format and must follow the following naming standard: presentation-title_YourFirstName_YourLastName.pdf. If you used google slides, also embed the slides in your blog/journal.

See here some Presentation Guidelines: https://wp.nyu.edu/artandtheanthropocene/2024/09/18/presentation-guidelines/

Evaluation will consider:

  • Subject Knowledge 30%
  • Quality of the information 30%
  • Discussion 30%
  • Essay Reflection 10% (can resubmit until week 12): Contextualize your research in the context of the course readings (choose 2) and themes (choose 1). Approx. 350 words

Those who present in the first sessions will have less time to prepare. This will be taken into account in the assessment and they will get more time to review their essays reflections.

PROJECT 1: (RE)CONSTRUCTIONS

We would like you to work in pairs in the initial stage of this project. Together you will develop one shared concept informed by the course readings, discussions, and assignments. You should identify specific materials, scale, site (inside gallery, outside on location…) that speak to that concept. Record all this in written form as well as sketches, and post it on both your blogs. (Yes, this post should essentially be the same for both of you.)

You can use repurposed and/or transformed natural materials – such as cardboard, paper-mache, wood shavings/sawdust, plants and leaves, cloth, yarn, beeswax, and/or natural dyes from foods and plants – to create interactive, non-digital installations. You should not use plastic or other non-biodegradable materials. Note: although you may used found objects in their original form, a significant part of the installation must be made from transformed material.

After creating a concept together, you have the choice to continue to work together on the finish piece or to branch off and work independently.

We will be installing the pieces in the Student Gallery Space on B2. However, if your concept demands that you install your work at an alternative site, you are welcome to do so. In this case, you should have well crafted documentation to install in the gallery (video, photos – multiple angles and scaled details, some or all of the materials, drawings, etc. to help us better interpret the work). We can make monitors and plinths available for this.

PROJECT 2: POSSIBLE FUTURES

In these project, you will speculate for critical and provocative purposes about possible futures. You will also explore the potential of the medium to deliver highly sensory experiences.

The goal of this project is to develop a bio-material as an alternative to commercially available non-sustainable materials(i.e.plastics) or with a negative impact on the environment(i.e.cotton, leather, denim). This application will be a prototype in the form of a fashion item, an art installation, a speculative object, etc.

Same as before, after creating a concept together informed by the course readings, discussions, and assignments, you have the choice to continue to work together on the finish piece or to branch off and work independently. Please be aware that after final presentations on Wednesday December 11, you are required to exhibit your project during the IMA show, on Friday December 13, 6pm to 8pm.

In this project you might use other materials, but the biomaterial you will use should be the main material of the project (80% at least). Keep in mind that when there is an option, you will choose natural materials over synthetic or unsustainable materials.
