Nicole Greenhouse’s Blog: Attending the Society of American Archivists’ 2013 Annual Meeting

Thanks to the generosity of the Mattingly Award, I was able to go and present a student poster, “Applying DACS to Tamiment’s Web Archiving Program” and make my first trip to both New Orleans and the annual meeting of the Society of American Archivists. Over four and a half days, I got to explore NOLA, socialize with other archivists from all over the country, and learn and talk about one of my favorite archival topics, web archiving. At Tamiment, I have spent the better part of two and a half years working on their Web Archiving Project, capturing labor unions and left activism websites for future research use. Tamiment has always sought to collect ephemeral documents relating to the Left, and most contemporary ephemera is now found on the web.  So naturally, my first SAA was going to revolve around web archiving.

After a day and a half of sightseeing, I attended the first ever Web Archiving Roundtable meeting at SAA. It was amazing to hear about the different projects being started, the difficulties of starting a project, and seeing the large turnout for the roundtable meeting (especially since it was at the same time as the ArchivesSpace roundtable meeting). It inspired me to join the Web Archiving Best Practices Committee/Toolbox.

I also attended a Web Archiving Service (WAS, the service used by Tamiment) users meeting. I was able to meet with other users to hear how they use the service, as well as to meet with the good people from WAS and give constructive feedback about the service.  I attended an interesting session about web archiving collection development policies and spent many hours meeting others interested in web archiving, both while presenting my poster and during the conference in general. Chela, Tamiment’s head, even gave a shout out to our Occupy Wall Street web collections during her presentation!

All in all, it was a great trip and I learned so much about the archival community and what is new and up and coming in the profession. I am already excited about next year!

I was fortunate and grateful to receive a Paul H. Mattingly Award through the NYU History Department to help attend the 2013 Society of American Archivists Annual Meeting this August in New Orleans. The conference was a great experience.

I would strongly encourage all archives students to try to attend SAA (or regional conferences, if that seems more feasible). Attendance provides an opportunity to understand how people are applying themes discussed in class to practice. It also gives a chance to hear about interesting new strategies that may not yet have made their way to the classroom. Additionally, it gives insight into how issues are debated in the community. Different institutions and individuals have different priorities, and it is very informative to see how archivists discuss challenges, both formally through sessions, sections, roundtables, and addresses and informally pretty much everywhere else.

Just one example of the free stuff that you can obtain at the SAA Annual Meeting!

Plus, it’s just plain fun to connect with people who share similar interests and goals! This is a week where you can talk about your work in great detail and go crazy with the jargon without fear of boring or losing those around you. While by the end of this whirlwind you will likely be exhausted, overall it is a very rewarding experience.

Director Peter Wosh Receives Award from the Society of American Archivists

Professor Peter Wosh, director of NYU’s Archives and Public History program, received the Society of American Archivists’ (SAA) 2013 Council Exemplary Service Award.  This award recognizes his contribution to the Society as the SAA Publications Editor from February 2007 to February 2013.  Professor Wosh received the award on August 15, 2013 at the SAA and Council of State Archivists Joint Annual Meeting in New Orleans.

Wosh’s many accomplishments during his tenure as the SAA Publications Editor highlight why he deserves this award.  The Society of American Archivists published twenty books during the six years Professor Wosh served as SAA Publications Editor.  Wosh also enabled the SAA to launch the new series Trends in Archives Practice following its research and development phase.  Professor Wosh also worked with Brigham Young University to publish The Interactive Archivist and with the Bentley Historical Library at the University of Michigan to publish Campus Case Studies series.

As the Society of American Archivists’ news release announced, the Council stated that Peter Wosh “served as an enthusiastic ambassador for the SAA publishing program at regional and national conferences.”  Wosh’s own publications, including writing Waldo Gifford Leland and the Origins of the American Archival Profession and editing Public Relations and Marketing for Archives, further attest to his contributions to both the Society of American Archivists and the larger archival profession.

Congratulations Professor Wosh!
