Simmons Digital Curriculum Laboratory

Hi Everyone —

You will notice in the press release below that Simmons College has received a grant to build an Archives and Preservation Digital Curriculum Laboratory to create some learning modules for training students to work on a variety of digital archiving and preservation initiatives. I am happy to say that we will be participating in the project as one of the test sites. Our kickoff meeting at Simmons will be held in April, and you will be hearing more about our participation as things move forward.

BOSTON (March 1, 2010) — The Simmons College Graduate School of Library and Information Science (GSLIS) has received a grant of $138,182 from the National Historic Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) for the project “Building an Archives & Preservation Digital Curriculum Laboratory.”

Through this NHPRC grant and an IMLS grant received in 2009, GSLIS will build a digital curriculum laboratory to enhance archives and preservation education. The Lab will enable students, educators and researchers to learn, instruct and experiment with digital materials in a digital environment. Goals built into this grant include building the infrastructure of the lab, and producing learning modules.

The Simmons Archives and Preservation Digital Curriculum Lab will be a controlled digital space providing integrated access to digital content, content tools, curriculum-based scenarios, and workspaces. Students will have opportunities to experiment with and implement a range of digital archival and preservation procedures from record creation through preservation and delivery. The Lab will allow educators and students to evaluate and gain practical experience with current software and standards and a variety of open source content management systems.

Curriculum development specialists from Yale University and Tufts University will work in conjunction with GSLIS faculty on scenarios and learning modules. The scenarios will be tested and evaluated in the archives education programs of New York University, the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee and by students of Simmons College.

NHPRC, the grant-making arm of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), supports a wide range of activities to preserve, publish, and encourage the use of documentary sources relating to the history of the United States.

The nationally ranked Simmons GSLIS (www.simmons/gslis) is one of the oldest and largest library and information science programs in the nation. It is also ranked as one of the top 10 Archives/Preservation Management programs in the country by U.S. News & World Report.

Subject: [CNI-ANNOUNCE] UK Digital Lives Program Synthesis Draft Available
Reply-To: CNI-ANNOUNCE — News from the Coalition

The Digital Lives program in the UK has recently made a draft of a major synthesis of its work available at its web site

http://britishlibrary.typepad.co.uk/digital_lives/

This is an extensive look at the way in which personal records and histories are migrating into digital forms and an analysis of some of the implications for memory organizations and scholarly work.

The site also contains other material that may be helpful, including documentation from the Digital Lives Conference and a late 2009 report on legal and ethical issues surrounding personal digital collections.

Connecticut Humanities Council’s Heritage Resource Center

Hello Public History Educators,

I wanted to share with you a new website that I’ve had a hand in crafting and ask for your assistance. It is the Connecticut Humanities Council’s Heritage Resource Center (HRC) Web site. It is an important new resource that supports the work of history museums by promoting institutional stabilization and audience development.

A recent announcement in the Federation of State Humanities Councils newsletter describes the project:

The Connecticut Humanities Council recently launched an online “Heritage Resource Center” (HRC). Built primarily to address the needs of Connecticut’s heritage constituents, its readings and resources also reflect national issues facing that community and capture current best practices in the field. Visitors who find it useful are encouraged to share it with constituents in the museum field.

Readers are invited to post comments on articles and posts they find particularly helpful. The site will also feature reports, surveys, white papers from successful CHC stabilization projects and other data of particular importance to the museum community and, especially, to prospective applicants to the Connecticut Humanities Council’s Revitalization Fund. Some of these resources are already available online and all are available in hard copy upon request to HRC staff. Additionally, visitors to the site can find the “Community Center” where they can suggest additional readings, alert their colleagues to upcoming professional development opportunities and cite conference papers that they found particularly useful.

As a new site, we’d love you to add to the discussion and suggest resources. Content is added frequently. You can follow the HRC on an email update or subscribe to an RSS. Please also encourage students to use and post to the site. It is a good place for them to find resources for a paper or project, join professional conversations, and learn about issues facing history museums. Students can also take advantage of the HRC’s lending library.

Thanks!

Briann
