American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee Photo Collection

JOB OPPORTUNITY AT HISTORIC PHOTO ARCHIVE COLLECTION

The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee’s photo collection constitutes one of the most valuable sources in the world for a pictorial study of Jewish life in the 20th century.

From World War I until the present, professional photographers and JDC staff helped fulfill JDC’s responsibility to communicate to the public the extent of the needs overseas and how entrusted funds were spent. As a result, more than 100,000 photographic images, many rich in ethnographic detail, provide a parallel visual history to JDC’s massive text archives, and literally put a face on individuals and (many now-vanished) communities reached by JDC’s life-saving work in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

The significance of the JDC Archival collection has been noted by photographic experts and by researchers.

The JDC Archives (http://www.jdc.org/jdc-history/global-archive.aspx) has a full-time job opening for a position on its photo-digitization project.

Primary Tasks:

Preparation of on-line photo galleries from the post-World War II period:
• Selection of photos to be included in each gallery
• Preparation of written descriptions of the galleries
• Editing of descriptive information on the selected photographs

Cataloguing of descriptive data on photographs in the pre-World War II period:
• Review of the descriptive data in the photo database
• Editing and expanding upon the database information

Requirements:
• B.A. degree
• Experience navigating databases
• Interest in history and/or photography helpful
• Attention to detail and accuracy

Please send a cover letter and resume to Robin Salsberg, Director of Human Resources, at robin.salsberg@jdcny.org.
