About the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience
The International Coalition of Sites of Conscience (www.sitesofconscience.org) is a worldwide network of “Sites of Conscience” – historic sites dedicated to remembering past struggles for justice and addressing their contemporary legacies. Sites of Conscience, like the Lower East Side Tenement Museum in the United States, the Gulag Museum in Russia and the District Six Museum in South Africa, foster public dialogue on social issues to build lasting cultures of human rights. The Coalition provides member sites with direct funding for civic engagement programs; organizes learning exchanges ranging from one-on-one collaborations to international conferences; and conducts strategic advocacy for sites and the Sites of Conscience movement. Currently, the Coalition is led by 17 Sites of Conscience and includes more than 230 members in 44 countries.
About the Guantánamo Public Memory Project
The Coalition is launching a new international project to raise broad public awareness of the entire history of the US Naval Base at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. The Guantánamo Public Memory Project will collect and make public stories, documents, photos, videos and oral testimonies from different perspectives and time periods throughout Gitmo’s 100 year history. Using Web 2.0, media, art, documentary, etc. the project will invite the public to share their own stories of Gitmo and engage in debate about the larger issues this site and others like it across the world raise. An initial step in this project will be to map existing resources related to Guantánamo’s history, as well as organizations and individuals with resources to contribute.
About the Internship
The intern will be responsible for researching and analyzing current press coverage on Guantánamo, including detecting news trends, story ideas and interventions that can be made in today’s debates around closing Gitmo. Additionally, the intern will identify key journalists, individuals and organizations who influence the debates in the media.
Responsibilities include:
Compiling press clips on a weekly basis via Google alerts, LexisNexis, etc.
Analyzing media clips to identify trends and issues
Researching and updating media lists
Maintaining a calendar of upcoming events
Preparing Coalition information and press packets
Qualifications
Background in public relations/communications and/or journalism
Excellent research, communication and organization skills required
Familiarity with internet databases and search engines
Knowledge of Arabic or Spanish a plus
Ability to work independently and creatively
