Archives of the American Field Service and AFS Intercultural Programs Internship Announcement

The Archives of the American Field Service and AFS Intercultural Programs is hiring one intern to assist in remote reference for and basic processing of archival collections, including records documenting the history and service of American volunteer ambulance drivers during World Wars I and II.

The American Field Service and AFS Intercultural Programs, Inc.:

The American Field Service was founded by American-born A. Piatt Andrew, who secured an authorization from the French Army for American volunteer ambulance units to rescue wounded soldiers in battle during World War I.  Under Andrew’s leadership, AFS took part in every great battle in which French troops were engaged between 1915 and 1917, until the U.S. entered the war.  Stephen Galatti reactivated AFS during World War II, and from 1940 until 1945 AFS volunteer drivers served in France, North Africa, the Middle East, Italy, France, Germany, and India and Burma.  Today, AFS Intercultural Programs, Inc. is an international nonprofit organization that provides intercultural learning opportunities to help people develop the knowledge, skills, and understanding needed to create a more just and peaceful world.

Description:

The primary responsibility of the Archives of the American Field Service and AFS Intercultural Programs intern will be to arrange and describe small archival collections under the supervision of the AFS Head Archivist.  The intern will also assist in other related activities as needed, including remote reference assistance.

Minimum one day (or two half days) per week, with flexible hours between 9:30-5:00, Monday through Friday for the duration of the spring semester (January through April 2012.)

This internship is available for academic credit.

International Center of Photography Summer Internships

Internship Opportunity at the International Center of Photography, NYC

Spend a semester interning at the country’s premier photography museum!

We are seeking summer interns to work at the International Center of Photography (ICP) on the Roman Vishniac Archive, a recent and groundbreaking gift to the museum’s permanent collection. Roman Vishniac’s photographs of Central and East European Jewish life, captured from 1935-38, are considered the last photographic documentation of these now vanished Jewish communities. The majority of his work has never been published or seen by the public, and the collection includes tens of thousands of prints and negatives, contact sheets, personal correspondence, audio material, and ephemera. We are currently working to build a comprehensive archive of the famed photographer’s entire body of work. The archive project will culminate in a large-scale retrospective, including a catalogue and symposia, scheduled to open at ICP in 2013.

We are seeking highly motivated graduate or undergraduate students or recent graduates of Art History, History, Jewish Studies, and/or Library Science. Museum or archival experience is preferred. We will provide training in photo handling and Jewish visual culture. We are also seeking interns with knowledge of German, Russian, Yiddish, or Hebrew to assist in archiving a lifetime of correspondences and documents.

Internships are unpaid, but offer other perks. We are happy to work with academic departments to provide school credit for internships. Interns also earn free use of one of NYC’s best darkrooms and digital printing facilities at the ICP School. Interns are eligible for a 50% discount off of ICP courses and workshops at the ICP School and are invited to attend ICP openings and special events. We are currently accepting applications for summer internships and ask for at least a four day a week commitment. To apply please email a resume, letter of interest, and the contact information (including phone numbers) for three references to Rachel Travis at rtravis@icp.org.
