Making Accessible Art Trancript
Our project is called Making Art Accessible our team members are Joan, Ailiya, Cheer and Eva. Our mentor is Edwin Corchado Our collaborators are George, Ikesha and Veleka. I may introduce the overall project description. According to our data profile number 7, the 2012 survey of public participation in the arts showed that nearly 28 million US adults, or 12 percent of the adult population, will have some type of disability were equally as all adults to have engaged in some forms of arts, Participation, such as creating visual arts, doing creative writing, or consuming, art via electronic media. Not every mind or body will experience art the same way, but every mind and body is entitled to the experience. So we are trying to create an online gallery that offers an alternative learning experience for those who are visually or auditory Impaired by providing a way of seeing art through voice, led by audio descriptions and any other conversations. Here are some project challenges that we faced. So the project was very open ended, so we weren’t really sure which direction we would initially. Some of our initial ideas included helping make their physical gallery more accessible by adding braille descriptions, or creating audio descriptions that would be accessible via phone. We ended up meeting around three times with our mentor and artists to finalize our project goals. After finalizing the project goals, we had some trouble with designing the website with multiple accessibility groups in mind. While doing research on website accessibility, we realized that we should avoid things like dictating colors and font settings and trying to post documents in a text-based format since they are more compatible with assistive technologies. So our final project goal is we try, we’re trying to create an online gallery so the artist can share more of their work with the world and allow people to get to know them. Because we realize the artists from Brooklyn, Day Rehabilitation program is contributes only a small portion of the artwork and a lot of their work that does not get shown in the HeartShare gallery. From our research, a direct link between words and images emphasize the importance of language we use to translate art across multiple senses. Making clear the need for facilitators who can provide direct translations of the work across a variety of channels. Here are some good examples of texts and audio descriptions. So the first one is from my Mind’s Eye from Guggenheim Museum. So the audio description they provided has an optimistic voice over and vivid backgrounds sounds to help the audience to get an immersive experience. And another one is statues from Metropolitan Museum. Here is how the Met describe the status. Marble statues group of three nude women standing in line. Fragmented is sculpture of three idealized female nudes missing their heads and facing different directions. Marble sculpture of three head less nude women with their arms around each other. So right now we have our website up and we currently have interviews with the artists that have captions in them on the page. On this side, you can see screenshots of each of the artists. We are thinking about refining them, are filming them in a more quiet setting so they’re easier to hear for all the people who view our website. And while we’re researching, There’s a few things we’re keeping in mind. We’re thinking about adding audio descriptions of the exhibition materials, sharing videos that have alt tags on them. So they are comprehensive and clear. thinking that Implementing colorblind friendly design, integrating text-to-speech, and making sure that the layout is friendly to all the people who view our website Some of the things that we still need to do on our website is collect some more artwork. They’ll be featured on the website and we want to include detailed audio and text descriptions. As we get more artwork, we also want to conduct more interviews so that all of the artists that we have there, the website have their own interviews. And then within the interviews adding text and audio descriptions. We still have some questions and feedback and we want to collect them from you. First, is there something that we can do more to add to make our website more accessible. And second, we want some general feedback sound the current website layout And that’s it. Thank you
