Project Description
The found footage creative captions is a project where captions are made from a video in a creative and interactive way, so that the audience may not only understand the content but also be engaged on a more meaningful level.
Documentation
The entire process was on Adobe Premiere – learning the software was super insightful.
Reflection Questions
What is the theme of the work?
The theme of the work is accurately presenting a medium in an intentional way as to provide all peoples with all sight and hearing levels to be able to experience the same way as anyone else.
How is that theme particularly expressed through the modality of the week?
This theme is particularly expressed through effective captioning that can be both artistic and functional. Captioning as a specific medium for transmitting information has a lot of potential in both of these ways.
Which elements of the work are beautifully/wonderfully/perfectly expressed through the modality?
The conciseness of this specific work really comes through with the captions. The video itself from 1955 is about manners and how young kids should interact in social settings. Due to the informational component of the piece, the captions eloquently present information to the audience as to explain the content of the media, but also to relay the message and information, itself.
Which elements are lost or inexpressible through the modality of the week?
Certain tonal components of the medium are lost through captions. The tones of the people themselves are difficult to translate into captions, seeing as though they are subjective and very slight tonal shifts. Due to this, tonal and behavioral recognitions in the characters must either be observed through body language, or objectively transmitted into the captions.
Who does this project exclude? Who would not be able to interact with this work? Who is this modality not accessible for?
This project excludes people who can neither hear not see. Th modality is therefore not fully accessible because of this.
Now that you’ve identified who is excluded, what is one way you could remix this piece to include another population? (You don’t have to make this part, but think about it and write about it).
It would be super cool to have the captions translated and made into braille – especially for short artistic pieces that use the same video medium, it could have a really powerful impact.
