Nai Hernandez: Midterm Portfolio – #1 Alt Text Comic

The Project

This screenshot of a Google Slide features the title 'A Day in the Life' at the top. Below, there are three drawings. On the left, a cat is lounging on a couch with the text 'Morning time, about 8 AM' underneath. In the middle, the same cat is inside a cooking pot with the text 'Cooking routine' beneath it. On the right, the cat is sitting next to a boy with the text 'Office assistant to close up a long day' below.

Project Description

For this project, I wanted the chance to make a silly comic strip using Alt Text about my cat 🙂

Documentation

Ideation & Sketching:
  • Some of my sketches I made for this project:
    • I was originally gonna use 5 images to make this comic- but I ended up using only 3 because I wasn’t able to figure out how to properly work the VoiceOver feature on my own
    • A drawing of a cat sitting inside an empty cooking pot
A drawing of a boy lying on his stomach with a cat beside him. Both are focused on a computer screen.
    • A drawing of a cat staring at a TV screen.

Researching Comics for good alt text practices

  • After having my drawings figured out I wanted to take some time to do some research, I went and googled artists who incorporated alt text in their work.
  • One of the most important resources I used was this guide I found on Twitter
    • It was a very useful guide, I really liked the advice on starting of your alt text with the number of panels found in the comic strip so that you could later refer to it by number as you’re moving through the comic strip
    • Guide to alt text 🙂 that I found on Twitter
Writing my Alt Text & Testing it: Panel Alt Text

  • I wanted to really emphasize the number of panels so I made sure to initiate all my alt text with a numerical description
    • example: Three Panel comic. Comic Panel one shows a cat with a black bow-tie sitting comfortably on a couch, looking to his right and saying, ‘Just sitting here, mentally preparing for a busy day.
  • To test my alt text, I used the voiceOver feature that comes with my Mac. Wasn’t able to quite figure out how to use it for more than 3 comic strip frames. Definitely looking to spend more time on figuring this out as next steps.

Reflection Questions

What is the theme of the work?

The theme of this piece of work centers around a 3 panel comic strip that is humorously depicting the various actions of a character who happens to be a cat. This piece leverages alt text and captions to help convey all the possible elements of the story to make it more accessible for blind or low vision readers

How is that theme particularly expressed through the modality of the week?

Through captions and alt text leveraged on google slides, as well as a screen reader that was used to test the piece

Which elements of the work are beautifully/wonderfully/perfectly expressed through the modality?

The dialogue of each character in the piece was well captured through alt text as well as some of their physical traits

Which elements are lost or inexpressible through the modality of the week?

Some of the visual humor of the piece is lost because the piece solely relies on alt text and captions. Also, lot of the character’s expressions/ essence and overall comic strip aesthetic is lost as well

Who does this project exclude? Who would not be able to interact with this work? Who is this modality not accessible for?

This piece excludes people who are deaf or hear of hearing especially since screen readers are being used along sides this piece

Now that you’ve identified who is excluded, what is one way you could remix this piece to include another population? (You don’t have to make this part, but think about it and write about it).

One way to remix this piece is to write details like sound effects directly into each comic panel and more in-depth captions

Additional Modality (if applicable)

What modality did you apply? For my midterm project I decided to add the additional modality of Audio Description 🙂 to this comic strip piece

How did you decide on this modality? I used a premier pro

What does the beholder gain from this additional modality? Why?  The Beholder gets an audio experience from a comic strip

Does the beholder lose anything from this modality? What? Tactile touch

Show documentation of this modality, and describe it if it’s not accessible on a screen (ie, if it’s tactile if it’s a scent)

Panel Comic Strip (1)

A black-and-white comic cover. In the center, bold black text reads, ‘The Adventures of Manchas.’ Behind the text, a cat, Manchas, with black spots and stripes stares directly at you, its eyes wide open, creating a sense of curiosity and intensity

A six panel comic strip that contains an image of a cat in each single panel

Script for Audio description:

The adventures of Manchas

A black-and-white comic cover appears on the screen. In the center, bold black
text reads, ‘The Adventures of Manchas.’ Behind the text, a cat, Manchas,
with black spots and stripes stares directly at you, its eyes wide open,
creating a sense of curiosity and intensity

As the page flips, a six-panel comic appears. In the first panel, we see
Manchas, the same cat with black spots and stripes, now wearing a black bow
tie. He’s sitting comfortably on a polka-dot couch, looking to the side.
In a speech bubble, Manchas says, 'Just sitting here, mentally preparing for a
busy day.' To the left are two pillows, and perched on the couch ledge above
them are several books and bags.

In the second panel, Manchas is nestled comfortably inside an empty cooking
pot, with only his head visible. He’s looking straight ahead, and in a speech
bubble, he says, 'Cooking my first meal! I do all the work around here.'

In the third panel, Manchas is wrapped tightly inside a rolled-up carpet, with
only his face peeking out. He looks seemingly concerned, his eyes wide with
worry. In a speech bubble, he says, 'Left my pot on the stove because I just
heard about my vet appointment. They won’t ever find me here.'

In the fourth panel, a text box on the left reads, '10 minutes later.' Manchas
is now sitting inside a cat backpack, his tail tucked closely under him as he
looks off to the side. The backpack rests on a chair. Inside the bag, two
toys—a fish and a cactus—sit untouched, while Manchas appears uneasy, as if
anticipating what’s to come.

In the fifth panel, the back of Manchas’s head is shown as he looks directly
at a TV screen sitting on a shelf. He’s staring intently at the screen.
A speech bubble next to him reads, 'Alright, that wasn’t so bad. At least
I was promised TV.'

In the final panel, Manchas is sitting beside a boy who is lying on his
stomach, staring intently at a computer screen. Manchas looks at the screen as
well, and in a speech bubble, he says, 'Here for moral support, even if I have
 no idea what's going on.
