Final Project: Tai Hirooka
Project Description
These are some physical and digital augmentations to the Heartshare survey that are designed to minimize the visual load of screen usage while maximizing user enjoyment.
Documentation
I made the frame by cutting out a piece of wood, and then used a mirrored video reflected off a clear sheet of PETG plastic at a 45 degree angle to create a Pepper’s Ghost Illusion. I also cut out stencils of my laptop screen and a simple figure, and made six slides which could go over any sort of image, whether printed out, or in person. Some of the slides were designed so that users could draw on them, and I also had extra pieces of paper to maximize that option as well. In person, I emphasized a very conversational approach in which I shared first.

Reflection Questions
Why did you choose this modality?
- I chose this modality because I received such good feedback on my first iteration. I wanted to expand on the idea that it made it easier to relate to the survey if a user could see themselves in it. I also wanted to make something that gave the user the option to focus on something in front of them that was relaxing but had elements which could remind them of the topic at hand.
Which elements of the original did you keep, if any? Why?
- I tried to keep the heart of the survey alive, mostly paraphrasing the original questions in plain language for ease of understanding.
Which elements of the original survey did you change? How did you change them? Why?
- I changed a lot of the wording and delivery to make the conversation flow more easily because I think interviews can be a little scary.
Post-evaluation reflection
Did you get the information you wanted?
- Yes, I did.
Do you feel that certain elements of your redesigned survey worked for you in eliciting information?
- Yes, I think sharing first really made the interviewee more comfortable, and there was positive response to the ability to draw and customize on the slides. Also, the fish were apparently quite relaxing.
Do you think that certain elements worked against you in discovering information?
- Not really, no.
Is there anything you would change or add to your survey for a next iteration of it, based on feedback from HeartShare?
- I think I’d do an entirely offline version of the physical slides, and also an entirely digital version as well. For the projection device, I think I’d keep that as is.
