PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Description of Team Name : We came up with several options and ended up with the name “Autoblade Clan” because the device we are going to create reminds us of Transformers and the character Wolverine in the movie X-men.
Main Point of Contact : YenAn
Meeting Schedule for the Semester: Regular meeting with Jose every Friday 11 AM
Project Plan: For our first meeting, we had a deep conversation about the device Jose is looking for. Our design will be based on the original one made by him and still using right now. The purpose for this project is to create another piece that is more comfortable in fabrics, more stable, and easier for him to control.
Overview of Tools and Expertise
- What tools/expertise will you leverage to complete the project? We definitely will work with materials such as: cardboards, rubber bands.. etc for prototypes. As for the materials for the final product, we are not sure about it at this point, but it’s going to be something related to fabrics.
- What additional tools/expertise will you need to complete the project? The deeper the conversation went, the more we know how Jose feels as well as the user experience from his own. There are some videos, and images Jose suggested to us in case we want to know more about sleeve arrows (something similar to the device).

COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS AND LITERATURE REVIEW (DUE 10/27/21)
What is commercially available to solve the problem?
Effect of assistive devices on hand and arm posture during activities of daily living
Alba Roda-Sales∗, Margarita Vergara, Joaquín L. Sancho-Bru, Verónica Gracia-Ibáñez, Néstor J. Jarque-Bou. Corresponding author. Departamento de Ingeniería Mecánica y Construcción, Universitat Jaume I. Av. de Vicent Sos Baynat, s/n. Castelló de la Plana, Castelló, E- 12071, Spain. (2018) Effect of assistive devices on hand and arm posture during activities of daily living.
This paper shows how important hand postures are related to human daily life, as well as making changes to shoulder flexion, elbow pronation and wrist deviation. The article focuses on the upper limb and aims to analyse the effect of assistive devices on hand and arm postures. The researchers had 22 products tested out by 10 healthy right-handed people (5 male, 5 female) in the experiment. Then they separated the posture results into two types of grasps: precision prasps and power grasps. The result showed that people tend to use power grasps more often than precision grasps when they have the help of assistive devices. The result actually meets what Landsmeer published in 1962, “In power grasps all the movements of the object have to be generated by the arm joints, while in precision handling the hand is able to perform the entire movement, without requiring any movement of the arm.”
Reflect on the impact of this solution
○ What is the relationship between your proposed solution and the current technologies your partner uses?
The device our partner uses right now is made by his own, so our design would be based on his first edition. Since we don’t want him to get familiar with another whole new device. We are looking for something similar to the first edition with one pointer and a body part. However, instead of two strips, we are going to add one more to the wrist, to hold his hand tighter to provide more strength.
○ How will your group ensure that your solution won’t interfere with your partner’s current daily activities & environment?
We had a meeting with Jose to measure out the length of his hand, as well as the width. To design a wearable device for him, we have to make sure the materials are comfortable enough and the size fits him. So we decided to come up with several prototypes that are created in different fabrics and styles for him to test out.
