Reflection questions:

Assignment Specific Question: Where do the text and image rub up against each other in your assignment? Where do you find tension or curiosity?

  • Within my edited video I find the text to consistently rub up against the image/video in a cozy yet firm manner. My intent was to ensure that the captions were in sync with the video and that it made sense. Especially since I used a music video which had a lot of moving parts, I wanted to try to give each scene it’s own individuality while still getting the point across. I find more curiosity within my video captions. First, at the beginning of the video I let some of the original captioning play, then I switched it to my re-mixed caption. I wanted the viewer to feel like “okay, something is happening now.” Then the user follows the story, however, the main character of the original music video is not the main character of this assignment. So the user has to rewire their brain and throw out conventional wisdom when it comes to music videos.

Modality

For better accessibility to viewers, I added a note to the start of the video to clarify that the piece I mad was adapted from an original body of work. I think this is important because it takes away any type of expectation from the video, and it allows the viewer to experience this work as something new. I noticed that while no one in class saw the original video, I was thinking about if someone saw the original music video, they would be so confused as to what was going on. So I figured a note would help everyone. Lastly, I made edits to the captions to make them synch better to the flow of the video. Now that I have way more experience with CapCut, I was able to get them to there I needed them to be. Even though the video is fast, the captions fit much better than the original.
