People take turns swiping a yellow card through metal slider. Once they slide their card through, they are then able to pass the metal barrier that blocks their way. Some have to swipe multiple times, some are able to pass with just one swipe. Each time a person swipes, a small sound and green light appears. At certain hours, small lines form to take turn in this swiping, with most people frustrated at the wait and impatient or anxious about missing the train about to leave. This is a routine action done by people multiple times a day. There does not look like much thought put into this, because they do this same thing everyday. Sometimes, there is a slight surprise when a person swipes and attempts to pass the metal barrier but is blocked. It takes them a few seconds to recollect and realize they must swipe again as the first swipe did not go through. There are even a few people who wait by the barriers hoping others will help them through with their card. Sometimes they are successful and other times they are not. However, there is a gateway that allows people to go through to the other side without having to go through the metal barriers. When this gateway opens, an low alarm sometimes rings and some people rush to pass through.
This week I took the time to observe the use of the metro card with the turnstile. I have used this form of interactive technology multiple times a day to go to and from school. I have been frustrated as I have swiped my card through, only to have to swipe again and sometimes again because my swipe was wither too slow or too fast. On some occasions, the turnstile has the audacity to take my money each time I swipe, but not let me through, sometimes resulting in me losing ten dollars or less for a trip. This is frustrating, but a problem people at the MTA know about, but refuse to fix. Many people know about this, but nothing is done because it is the fastest and sometimes only mode of transportation for people. Because of this, more leniency is given to this technology where it is not deserved. This everyday action has been a source of frustration for a long period of time mostly because of the obvious problems and inefficiencies that need to be addressed, but go ignored due to the fact that no alternate fast mode of other transport exists.
