How Computation Applies to my Interests:
Before coming to ITP, I worked in film and video production. I came up with creative concepts and figured out ways to deliver narratives in new and exciting ways. What drew me to film was the art of storytelling that combined both the written and visual mediums.
Recently, new technologies have started to open up the possibilities of expression within different fields, especially within film and video. I think learning and applying computation will allow me to explore these new possibilities and apply them to what I already know to further enhance the art of creative story telling. While I have a more theoretical understanding of computation, I am eager to learn the more technical aspects and start applying that to projects along the way.
A project from a former ITP alum that caught my interest, was a screenplay that was generated by an AI algorithm using neural networks. I think this shows the creative use cases of using code and AI within the field of film and narrative storytelling. It also starts to question the idea of the artist/author. Who is responsible for the end result – the AI, the multiple authors of the texts the AI was fed, or the person feeding the AI with the chosen texts?
We should always be ready to challenge and push the boundaries of what we know because that is the only way we’ll learn and discover new ways of doing what we thought we knew everything about.
