CCLab Reading 3: New Media Art: Introduction

In my opinion, the New Media Art is a new form of art that different from the past. In the author’s opinion, the web and CD-ROMs are the new forms of New Media Art in his/her time. In my personal understanding, the New Media Art contains a new form of art that highly rely on the technology methods which is totally different from the past form like paintings, sculptures, films, etc. However, the New Media Art defined today is more on the edge of technology development. For instance, the game industry can be the window of the New Media Art. The game contains a more interactive part that the used form of art. I’ve played many games with extraordinary graphics and music. With the development of the plot, I had a strong resonance in my heart and experienced the feelings and ideas that designers want to give players. In today’s technology background,  the New Media Art not only contains the Web and the CD-Roms, but also includes the VR, AR, and also the metaverse notion. Along with the popularity of the virtual world, the NFT artworks are still at the forefront of the trend.

John F. Simon Jr. is a new media artist who works with LCD screens and computer programming. In his work Every Icon, he made an icon described by a 32 X 32 grid. Every Icon progresses by counting. In his words, starting with an image where every grid element is white, the software displays combinations of black and white elements, proceeding toward an image where every element is black. In contrast to presenting a single image as an intentional sign, Every Icon presents all possibilities that this 32*32 icon can present to us. He utilizes the continuity and sustainability of the internet that the artwork can continually exist on the internet and has its own artistic effect. It shows every possibility and the scale of the time.

John Klima is an American new media artist, who uses hand-built electronics, computer hardware, and software to create online and in gallery artworks. Earth is a unique geospatial visualization system that culls real-time data from the Internet and accurately positions it onto a three-dimensional model of the Earth. The earth utilizes the collaborative feature of the internet and can make every update on time. Viewers are able to travel from layer to layer by zooming in and retrieving imagery and data for specific regions. It makes every user the contributor to the artwork which is not possible for the traditional form of art
