How I Define Interaction

Definition

Interaction is a process of mutual action and there’s something to do with people. There should be human-to-artwork interaction, or this work can lead to human-to-human interaction, which is either between viewers and viewers or between viewers and artists.

Also, the interaction work may also have variability, which means the working way of the work is not fully set and cannot be changed.

YES

One of the interactive art projects which aligns with my definition is the Les Machines de L’ile in Nante, France.

It’s a park where a few artists created delicate artificial animals which is in steampunk style, attracting visitors with its unusual and dream-like retro scene. In that park, people can not only watch the structures’ movement, but also interact with these Mechanical Animals by taking a ride or something else.

This park makes sense to me because:

  • Firstly, the “animals” are following some kind of art genre, which is definitely an huge series of artworks.
  • Secondly, people can do something with it, both the designers and the audience. The designers can control the animals’ movement, while the “audience” can actually be a part of this steampunk dream by participate in rides or pick up the remote control.

NO

This is a visible music project, which transfers invisible sound wave into visible wave showed on the screen.

It’s definitely a piece of artwork, for realizing and showing some new media-related idea. But I really doubt if it creates interactions(within my definition).

Obviously, this item consists 0f two parts, the inner code and program and the out device to show the image. The mode of its working is set, having no variability, so the viewers can only enjoy rather than participate,. In that way, I regard it as not interactive.
