Behind The Title: Walker Mask

Meet Walker Mask

What’s your name?
Walker Mask

What’s your job title?
Assistant Director of the Polytechnic Tutoring Center

Years/months at NYU:
1 year and 5 months

Hometown:
Rockwall, TX

What kind of projects do you work on?
At NYU Tandon, I focus on maintaining and improving student support through tutoring services, so I tend to work on projects focused on tutor training, student resource development, and effectively integrating tutoring with faculty instruction. I recently also picked up social media management for the PTC’s new Instagram account!

Any advice for new administrators?
Try to go to campus and departmental events aimed at admin, staff, and faculty, and if you can, volunteer to help with the large NYU events like commencement and move-in. It’s a great way to meet colleagues and get out of your office, which I know is super easy to get trapped in focusing on work so much.

What does a normal day look like for you?
Most of my days are a mix of working on projects, materials, and plans for tutoring and directly helping out the tutors I work with. I also often get wrapped up in conversations about tutoring, school, and classes with both tutors and other students at the tutoring center.

What is your fondest memory in your time here?
So far it’s volunteering at commencement and getting to support and see the senior students I worked with in my first year finish their college experience.

Name your favorite spot on campus.
Honestly, the Bobst basement, especially during the slow summer months. I’ll go there to do some reading or work on my own personal projects and the vibe down there is very comfortable.

What are you currently reading?
The Innovative University (by Clayton Christensen and Henry J. Eyring)

What is your go-to app on your phone right now?
I’m a video game nerd so lately it’s been the newest mobile Pokemon game- Pokemon TCG Pocket.

Coke or Pepsi?
Dr. Pepper (I’m from Texas, I have to choose that) but if you make me pick between those I more often go for Pepsi.

Coffee or tea?
Both- but always iced.

Favorite travel destination?
New Mexico

Describe yourself in only three words.
Always learning something.
