Behind the Title: Aimee Vargas

Meet Aimee Vargas

What is your name?
Aimee Vargas

What’s your job title?
Senior Advisor to the Dean

Years/Months at NYU:
1 year 3 months

What’s your hometown?
Queens

What kind of projects do you work on?
I oversee external affairs and strategy at NYU Silver.

What does a normal day look like for you?
A “normal” day is busy and usually starts with me checking my email between 5a-6a. It continues on with calls, meetings and emails — many opportunities to take a hold of and problems to be solved! I normally end my day about 8p-ish, checking email one last time.

Why NYU?
I chose NYU because of its great reputation and because I felt that it would be a dynamic place to work. NYU is also my husband’s alma mater AND is now home to my son, a First Year student at CAS.

Any advice for new administrators?
My best advice is to jump into the fray! There is so much to do and so many opportunities to do great work, that it would be a shame to sit on the sidelines.

Is there an NYU benefit or perk that you use or think everyone should know about?
The most amazing benefit is Tuition Remission. My son had a brilliant HS academic record and got into all but one college he applied to, so he would have been fine without me, but to be able to give him the gift of leaving college without debt is a huge blessing.

Name your favorite spot on campus.
My office. I have a great view of the WSQ Park!

Who do you know that you think we should know? Why?
My boss and Dean of the Silver School Michael A. Lindsey! I have worked for a number of highly talented, highly motivated individuals, who want to achieve excellence, but Michael is one of the rare few that does his work with kindness toward others. I appreciate him a lot (and not just bc he is my boss!).

What is your fondest memory in your time here?
My fondest memory thus far is bringing my son to Weinstein on move in day this past August with a big knot in my throat because I was becoming an empty nester. When I walked through the door I saw our Assistant Director for Communications Laura Morrison in the hallway volunteering to help new families like ours. It truly brought my work and home life together and reminded me that my son would be in good hands.

We spend a lot of time at our desks and they can tell us a lot about your personality. Show us yours!

What is your favorite book and why?
Any Mary Higgins Clark books. They are easy, adventurous reads!

What is your go-to app on your phone right now?
This is embarrassing but Royal Match is my go to at the moment. I do not have to think hard using it.

If you were a superhero, who would you be and why?
Super Woman because (1) she was one of the few Latina’s on TV when I was a kid and (2) because she was kicked butt!

Books or TV?
Both, though I only watch Friends, the Golden Girls or sports. And I read mostly news.

Coffee or tea?
Both but coffee everyday.

Horror or comedy?
Comedy.

What’s your favorite season?
Fall.

Favorite travel destination?
Anywhere outside the US.
