Headshot of Julie Kaplan

Meet Julie Kaplan

What is your name?
Julie Kaplan

What’s your job title?
Outreach & Events Coordinator

Years/Months at NYU:
36 years

What’s your hometown?
New York City (Queens, baby!)

What kind of projects do you work on?
Events, Recruitment, Alumni Relations, Diversity, Outreach, PR, and more.  I get to work with faculty, students, staff, alumni, vendors, donors, and members of the scientific research community both internally and externally, local and global.

If applicable, what’s your role in the AMC?
A&S rep, SUR, Alternate Senator, and co-Chair of the Special Events Committee for over a decade.

Any advice for new administrators?
I hate to sound like an advertisement, but I sincerely believe that getting involved with the AMC is the best advice I could give to a new administrator.  The AMC provides opportunities for social engagement, professional development, and broadening your understanding of this huge complicated institution.  It is interesting, informative, and, importantly, fun.  Participating in the AMC has been incredibly rewarding for me – both for the work I do (especially events, my favorite!) and just as a colleague, meeting fantastic people I might not encounter otherwise.

What does a normal day look like for you?
Part of what I love about my job is that there is no normal day!

What is your fondest memory in your time here?
Of all the events I have organized over the years, I especially love the multi-day international symposia I have coordinated with various scientists. Mostly, these have taken place on Washington Square, but I was fortunate enough to travel to NYU Shanghai in 2018 for a conference, which was an amazing opportunity, my first and only visit to Asia!

Is there an NYU benefit or perk that you use or think everyone should know about?
The inherent perk of being associated with NYU is something I have experienced for years, carrying NYU swag around and receiving delighted, friendly greetings from strangers not only in New York but in unlikely places around the country and abroad.  It is truly a global community!

What are you currently reading?
“Middlesex” by Jeffrey Eugenides.  A great read – a fascinating multi-layered story, beautifully written with compassion and humor.  Plus, it happens to take place (partly) in Detroit, where my son just started college, and from the picture Eugenides paints, I get to feel like I’m visiting!

Coke or Pepsi?
Coke

Coffee or tea?
Coffee with tons of half-and-half, but I also love tea. (Don’t make me choose!)

Favorite travel destination?
Italy and France for the food, wine, and art; Northern California for family (and not too shabby for the other stuff too!)
