Mirta Salomon

Meet Mirta Salomon

What is your name?
Mirta (Meerrr-tah) Salomon

What’s your job title?
Chief of Staff, Office of the VP & CHRO

Years/Months at NYU:
18.62 years per Peoplesync

What’s your hometown?
Born in Michigan. Raised in Jersey- livin’ on a prayer.

What kind of projects do you work on?
I work on supporting most of the projects that come across the CHRO’s desk related to the strategic and organizational development of HR for the division and university-wide. I also manage administrative operations for the HR division and, when applicable, will be involved with projects related to the administrative efficiency of the department.

Why NYU?
I grew up in a small town right outside NYC.  Despite the proximity to NYC, my access was limited. I felt that I needed to expand my worldview and I thought NYU could help with that expansion. I eventually made it here and it has exceeded my expectations in myriad ways.

Any advice for new administrators?
Welcome! NYU can be overwhelming but there is a community to be found here. I can’t stress enough the importance of relationship building across all levels. Those relationships will help you navigate NYU, get things done, or even just make work a little more pleasant. Start with your office/team and branch out. Before you know it, you’ll have built your personal NYU community and it’ll make your time here that much more meaningful. An NYU friend of mine, who is now in another industry, recently mentioned that anytime they need professional guidance or a resource, they tap into their NYU network and it always delivers because it’s a network of talented, smart, and kind people who are generous with support. I have been well-sustained by the relationships I’ve fostered through the years and hope you will be as well.  Also, sign up for different listservs and read those emails. It’s a treasure trove of free programming, events, and opportunities.

What does your typical day look like?
Start to-do list, address an urgency, check in with myself, be kind, repeat.

What is your fondest memory in your time here?
In 18 years, there are several moments for which I hold similar high levels of fondness. Those few are working commencement when it was still in Washington Square Park, my undergraduate and graduate ceremonies, being honored with our local Above & Beyond Award and the NYU Give-A-Violet award, and last, but most certainly not least, the friends I’ve made (hi, friends)

Is there an NYU benefit or perk that you use or think everyone should know about?
Tuition Remission changed my life. ScholasTix added some culture & fun. NYU Federal Credit Union offers great financial resources.

Name your favorite sport on campus.
The Sasaki Garden in Washington Square Village is wonderful.
