Meet Stephen J. Kaldon
What is your name?
Stephen J. Kaldon
What’s your job title?
Graphic Designer, NYU Reprographics, Logistics, and Distribution
Years/Months at NYU:
22 years!
What’s your hometown?
Bronx, New York
What kind of projects do you work on?
All aspects of design and print production for the University. Anything from your business cards to event posters, brochures, forms, programs, signage, etc. Resident “Torch Cop”, making sure the NYU torch is used properly in outside design that comes across my desk.
If applicable, what’s your role in the AMC?
AMC Art Exhibit Chair
Why NYU?
Two people were instrumental in getting me positions at NYU. The first position was offered by Nancy Lin in the electronic publishing department at the NYU Press. This seemed like a logical step in my publishing career at the time, having done every other job in publishing before that. Scott Lewis brought me to NYU Reprographics (known as Copy Central at the time), based on my design work for the AMC Art Show back in the early 2000’s.
After bouncing around the publishing world for many years with many publishers, I finally found a home at NYU.
Any advice for new administrators?
Don’t be afraid to pick up that phone and get the information you need to further your project. Most Admins that I call for info are super friendly and willing to help.
What does your typical day look like?
I start by speaking with my colleagues to see what’s on the agenda for the day. Then I check my emails and start making my (handwritten) list of priorities. I try to alternate my days between large projects and smaller projects which seems to get most things done by the end of the week. Very important to me is to take 15 minutes in the morning and 15 minutes in the afternoon to step outside and people watch, enjoy the trees and the birds, and get some fresh air!
What is your fondest memory in your time here?
Working on the AMC Art Show of course!
Is there an NYU benefit or perk that you use or think everyone should know about?
Haha, I already revealed that one in another forum, and have lived to regret it. To the point where I’m having a hard time taking advantage of it now!
We spend a lot of time at our desks and they can tell us a lot about your personality? Show us yours!
Do you have a hidden talent?
I don’t hide my talents, lol. Musician, artist, photographer, writer, publisher, curator.
What are you currently reading?
Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk by Legs McNeil and Gillian McCain. Stories from the sources of the downtown NYC music scene from 1965 – 1992. Hilarious, sad, and tragic.
