Behind the Title: Andrea Muraca

Meet Andrea Muraca!

What’s your official job title?
Assistant Director, Student & Alumni Affairs at the College of Global Public Health

What’s your hometown?
Calabria, Italy

What kind of projects do you work on?
In my role, I plan Student Affairs events such as Orientation and Career Week, which happens during the first week of the academic year. I manage several other events such as career panels, career fairs, and social activities. I have also created and managed a weekly career newsletter called the “Public Health Post” that includes all the most recent opportunities for students about fellowships, internships, jobs, and events.

Another aspect of my position includes program advising for the Department of Epidemiology and for the Department of Policy and Management. I act as advisor and the first point of contact for international students at the College of Global Public Health. I am in my third year as a mentor of the Milan Capstone project for Global Health students  – this year’s project focuses on tobacco and nicotine usage and knowledge among migrants and their health providers at the Opera San Francesco organization in Milan, Italy. Since February 2019, I have also co-taught a class titled Experiential Learning in Public Health for undergraduate students majoring in Global Public Health (GPH). This course engages in hands-on, field-based activities designed to promote student exposure to and understanding of public health. This year the topic of the class is electronic cigarettes and vaping among college students.

What is your fondest memory in your time here?
Orientation because this is the first moment of meeting new students, and I love seeing their enthusiasm in pursuing their new adventure as public health professionals.

Another fond memory is getting my working visa approved and experiencing the happiness and love from my boss and colleagues over this news.

We spend a lot of time at our desks and they can tell us a lot about your personality. Show us yours!
In the corner of my office I have two seats and a table where students sit and talk. There is a section on this table referred as the “stress free corner” which has stress balls, a mini zen garden, and sweets. While I work, many students come, sit and de-stress by using these stress busters.
